- starting or changing Direct Deposit online (Social Security benefits only), or
- contacting your bank, credit union or savings and loan association, or
- calling Social Security toll-free at 1-800-772-1213(TTY 1-800-325-0778), or
- visiting your local Social Security Field Office or
signing up for the Direct Express® debit card.
The Direct Express® card is a debit card you can use to access your benefits and you don't need a bank account.
With the Direct Express® card program, we deposit your federal benefit payment directly into your card account. Your monthly benefits will be available on your payment day—on time, every time. You can use the card to make purchases, pay bills or get cash at thousands of locations.
It’s quick and easy to sign up for the card. Call the toll-free Direct Express® hotline at 1-800-333-1795. Also, Social Security can help you sign up.
If you don't have an account, you must open an account before you can sign up for Direct Deposit. You should shop around in your area to find an account that has the features you want at a price you can afford. When you decide on the account that is right for you, let the representative at the financial institution know that you are interested in signing up to receive your benefits by Direct Deposit.
Not currently receiving benefits
If you don’t get Social Security or SSI benefits yet but are planning to apply, tell the Social Security representative when you apply for benefits that you want to sign up for Direct Deposit. If you already have an account, have your checkbook or a copy of your bank statement with you.

Citibank: Up to $1,500
Citibank is offering up to $1,500 to customers who open a new checking account by Jan. 4, 2022. To qualify for the bonus, funds must be deposited within 20 days after opening the account. The account balance on the 20th day determines the bonus amount.
- Making a minimum deposit of $15,000-$49,999 and maintaining that minimum balance can earn you $300
- Making a minimum deposit of $50,000-$199,999 and maintaining that minimum balance can earn you $700
- Making a minimum deposit of $200,000 or more and maintaining that minimum balance above $200,000 can earn you $1,500
Other important information about this offer:
- Customers who have closed a Citibank checking account within the last 180 days are ineligible.
- These offers are not available in all areas.

As long as you don’t have an existing PNC consumer checking account or have not closed one within the past 90 days, you could qualify for a $50, $200 or $300 bonus.
These offers may vary or not be available in different regions.
To earn the $300 bonus, open a new PNC Virtual Wallet with Performance Select and make $5,000 or more of total qualifying direct deposits into your Spend account.
To earn the $200 bonus, open a new PNC Virtual Wallet with Performance Spend and have $2,000 or more in qualifying total direct deposits into your Spend account.
To earn the $50 bonus, a new PNC Virtual Wallet is required, along with $500 or more in qualifying total direct deposits in your Spend account.

M&T Bank: up to $250 bonus
You can earn up to $250 for opening any personal checking account at M&T Bank by Jan. 10, 2022.
- Within 90 days of the checking account’s opening, a qualifying direct deposit of at least $500 must be made to qualify for the bonus.
M&T Bank earned 3.5 out of 5 stars in Bankrate’s review. M&T Bank is headquartered in Buffalo, New York.
Chase Bank: $225 bonus
Through Jan. 19, 2022, Chase is offering a bonus on certain new checking accounts.
- To earn $225, open a new Total Checking account and have a direct deposit totaling $500 or more within the first 90 days.
To qualify for the bonus, you must not have an existing Chase checking account (or had one closed with a negative balance in the past three years or closed within the last 90 days).
- College students ages 17-24 can earn $100 by opening the Chase College Checking account.
Ten qualifying transactions (debit card purchases, online bill payments, checks paid, Chase QuickDeposit, Zelle or ACH credit to the account) within 60 days of coupon enrollment are required to earn this bonus. The coupon can be found on Chase’s website.

Huntington National Bank: Up to $300 bonus
Huntington Bank has two checking account bonuses available for both consumers and business owners. Through Feb. 7, 2022 you can earn:
- $150 for opening an Asterisk-Free Checking account and making a cumulative deposit of at least $1,000 within 60 days of the account opening.
- $200 for opening a Huntington 5 Checking account and making a cumulative deposit of at least $1,000 within 60 days of the account opening.

Best business checking account bonus
Huntington National Bank: $200, $400 or $750 bonus
You can earn up to $750 by opening the following new business checking accounts at Huntington National Bank:
- Business Checking 100: Earn $200 (Minimum deposit of $5,000 required to earn bonus.)
- Unlimited Business Checking: Earn $400 (Minimum deposit of $5,000 to earn bonus.)

Here’s what you should know about these offers:
- Open one of the accounts listed before Nov. 7.
- Make the required cumulative deposits within 60 days of account opening and keep the account open for at least 90 days. Deposits must be new money from outside of Huntington National Bank.
Why banks have sign-up bonuses
Banks use sign-up bonuses to distinguish themselves from others in the industry. Cash bonuses also help financial institutions bring in new customers and new deposits. Banks are particularly inclined to offer bonuses in a rising interest rate environment, when the spread between the interest rate they offer customers for deposits versus the interest rate they can get by lending money widens.
While they could pay account holders a higher yield, for some banks, offering a bonus is preferable.
“It’s much easier to quantify the bonus than it is to raise the rate on what you’re paying out on deposits,” says Greg McBride, CFA, Bankrate chief financial analyst.
Some banks offer more than one sign-up bonus. But qualifying for multiple bonuses at the same time at the same bank usually isn’t possible. Bank account bonuses are typically available only to new checking or savings account holders.
What to watch out for
Every bank account bonus isn’t a good deal. Before you sign up, read the fine print.
Watch out for sky-high minimum balance requirements and monthly fees that could eat into your earnings. If earning a bonus seems to require too much effort, you might want to look for another one.
If you’re applying for a checking account, make sure it’s a good match that meets your needs. For example, if you need to use branches and ATMs, double-check that there are plenty of them in your area. That way, you’re not driving miles to meet with a banker or wasting money on out-of-network ATM fees. And with coronavirus forcing banking to shift online more than ever before, look for a bank or credit union that offers a solid set of digital tools.
If you’re looking for a new savings account, consider whether you’re better off finding another bank that pays more interest.
For instance, one-time bonuses are typically offered on accounts that pay minimal interest. So while the bonus is great initially, you may be sacrificing the long-term return.

There are multiple reasons why you may not be able to sign in to Money in Excel. Check to see which may apply to you:
If you're new to Money in Excel:
Money in Excel is only available for Microsoft 365 Family or Personal subscribers.
You will not be able to log in to Money in Excel with a work or school account.
If you have a work or school account and would like to get a Microsoft 365 Family or Personal subscription, you may be eligible to receive a discount through the Home Use Program.
If you see this message, you've been added to the waitlist.

If you're returning to Money in Excel:

How do I reconnect my accounts within Money in Excel?
Plaid powers the connection between Money in Excel and your financial institutions. You may need to reconnect your financial accounts from time to time. This may be required if you recently changed your login credentials for your financial institution or if your financial institution has changed their login process.
From the Accounts tab in the Money in Excel pane, select Reconnect accounts for the appropriate account > select the bank institution > follow the steps to connect your account.
You can also reconnect accounts from the Settings tab of the Money in Excel pane. From the Settings tab, select Edit accounts > Edit > Sign in to reconnect.
I don't see the Money in Excel pane
If you accidentally closed the pane, select the Money in Excel icon on the right side of the Excel ribbon. This will open the pane.
If you don't see the Money in Excel icon in the ribbon, you can open the pane again from My Add-ins. Once you've completed set up, you should always see the Money in Excel icon in the Ribbon.
In the Excel app, go to Insert > My Add-ins > select Money in Excel.
In Excel for the web, go to Insert > Add-ins > My Add-ins > select Money in Excel.
Why won't the Money in Excel pane work?
If you’re on a Windows PC and see a yellow banner that says “PROTECTED VIEW”, select Enable Editing or Enable Content to enable the Money in Excel pane.
Why can't I edit my spreadsheet in Money in Excel?
Certain sheets, columns, and cells are locked to ensure that Money in Excel continues to function correctly.
Transactions sheet: On the Transactions sheet you may only edit Merchant name and Category. All other columns are locked. Do not delete the Transactions sheet as it powers the rest of your Money in Excel workbook.
Categories sheet: Default categories cannot be changed. You may add custom categories below default categories on the Categories sheet.
When I change a category, does it apply to past and future categories?
At this time, Money in Excel does not apply Category changes to past or future categories. See how to Organize your spending categories to learn how to quickly apply category changes to multiple transactions.
Why won't my bank account connect with Money in Excel?
There are several reasons you might not be able to connect your bank account. We use Plaid, a third-party data provider, to help power Money in Excel. Plaid connects to bank accounts at over 10,000 financial institutions to more than 2,600 apps and services. It’s possible that Plaid cannot connect due to a bank's software updates, or disruptions to Plaid’s integrations with your specific financial institution. We first suggest retrying your connection.
If you’re consistently blocked from connecting, please reach out to your bank to see if they support connections to outside services. In some rare instances, your financial institution may not allow their customers to connect accounts to third-party services and apps.
Does Money in Excel support multi-factor authentication for my financial institution?
If your financial institution requires multi-factor authentication (MFA) as the default for logging in to your account, you will be able to connect to your financial accounts in Money in Excel with no issue.
If you have set up additional MFA with your financial institution, you will not be able to connect your financial accounts in Money in Excel. If this applies to you, you may see an error when you try to sign-in that says, “Account not currently supported. Multi-factor authentication is not currently supported for this account. Please log in using a different account.” If you have one of the following banks, this may apply to you:
Bank of America users with “Extra Security" at sign-in enabled for every sign-in.
Wells Fargo users with "2-Step Verification" enabled for every sign-in.
TD Bank users with "Single-Use Security Codes" enabled for every sign-in.
Citibank users with "2-Factor Authentication One-Time Pin (OTP)" enabled for every sign-in.
Fidelity users with "2-Factor Authentication by text, call, or VIP Access" enabled for every sign-in.
USAA users with "CyberCode Text" enabled for every sign-in.
Why can't I connect someone else's financial account to my Money in Excel workbook?
Money in Excel currently allows you to connect one set of financial credentials per institution. At this time, you are not able to add two people’s accounts for the same institution. You may, however, add another person’s account if it is for an institution that is not yet connected to your Money in Excel workbook.
How can I see older transactions?
Money in Excel pulls transactions from 30-90 days prior to the day you first connected that financial account. All transactions that occur after the initial account connection will be available to sync to your workbook when indicated by the sync bar in the Money in Excel pane.
Why aren't my transactions updating?
Plaid powers the connection between Money in Excel and your financial institutions. If your workbook isn't updating and new transactions aren't showing in the Transactions sheet, try these options:
Have you updated your transactions recently? In the Money in Excel pane, select Sync.
If you're still not seeing recent transactions, check the pane to see if you need to Reconnect your account.
If the issue persists, delete and re-add the financial institution. For instructions on how to delete a financial institution, see the section in the Money in Excel FAQ.
I can't find my financial institution. How can I add it?
If your financial institution is not available in Money in Excel, please submit feedback and we will do our best to add it.
Can I use Money in Excel on my phone?
Money in Excel is available on PC or Mac in the Excel desktop app, or in the browser with Excel for the web. You may view your Money in Excel file in the Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Office mobile app, but you will not be able to load new transactions, capture changes, or access the Money in Excel pane.
Why don't I see transactions from my investment account?
Investment account balances will show up in the accounts tab in the Money in Excel pane. Transactions for investment accounts will not show up on the Transactions sheet at this time.

Just a month after launching in the UK, JP Morgan is turning off Chase’s wait list for new customers.
If you’ve been waiting to try out JP Morgan’s Chase challenger bank in the UK, now is probably a good time, as the wait list for new customers has just been switched off.

Earlier this month JP Morgan’s UK venture was also revealed to be powered by tech from 10x Banking Technologies, the fintech founded by Antony Jenkins, former Group CEO of Barclays.
Across the pond JP Morgan Chase is currently using the core banking tech from Thought Machine to overhaul its US retail network.
It’s too early to label Chase UK as a success (or failure) of JP Morgan’s neobanking ambitions, but today’s removal of restrictions will certainly open up the app for more people to try it.
