A lot of us rely heavily on Amazon's fast shipping, even though the company doesn't have a perfect track record with customers. In 2020, the marketplace was hit with a slew of negative reviews from shoppers, who complained about delays, packages never arriving, and damaged items. This year, many Amazon customers expressed their disdain for the company after former CEO Jeff Bezos thanked them for "paying" for his flight to space. But a new policy set to come into effect in late October is making some customers so angry, they say they plan to cancel their Amazon Prime memberships altogether as a result. Read on to find out more about how Amazon is upsetting customers once again.

July 12, 2020 Sunnyvale / CA / USA - Brown bags with fresh groceries ordered online through Amazon Prime from Whole Foods Market and home delivered during the COVID-19 Shelter in Place order

A Whole Foods Market spokesperson told Fox Business that the fee was added so that the grocer would not have to increase the prices of its products to offset "operating costs, including equipment, technology, and other costs" associated with the Amazon delivery service. The company said it had delivered more than three times as many orders in 2020 than it had before the pandemic, and as the pandemic goes on, "customers continue to rely on delivery for their stocking up needs, as average basket sizes have continued to increase since the beginning of 2021," the spokesperson said.

"This service fee helps to cover operating costs so we can continue to offer the same competitive everyday prices in-store and online at Whole Foods Market," Amazon wrote in its email to Prime members, which many have shared on Twitter. The spokesperson told Fox that the company has had "consistent pricing on everyday priced products in store and online."

According to Amazon, this new fee has already been rolled out in six cities: Portland, Maine; Providence, Rhode Island; Manchester, New Hampshire; and the greater Detroit, Boston, and Chicago areas. In these areas, the new policy went into effect on Aug. 30.

In what’s presumably an effort to stay competitive with services offered by stores like Walmart and Target, Amazon is giving Prime members free access to its grocery delivery service Amazon Fresh. If you’re currently a Prime member, you can now order groceries without having to pay an additional $14.99 per month. However, if you’re just now subscribing amazon fresh not delivering Amazon Prime, you’ll need to express interest then wait for an invite to enjoy the free service.

Shopping for groceries can be really time-consuming, and while convenient and fast meal options may come cheap, they also tend to be pretty unhealthy. Luckily, more and amazon fresh not delivering options are popping up to help maximize the value of your time. Amazon Fresh was started in 2007 (in limited markets) by the world’s most popular online marketplace, and aims to deliver you fresh groceries at a price and time that works best for you.

Also, as a result of Amazon acquiring Whole Foods, you can order Whole Foods items through Amazon Fresh.

Amazon Fresh currently delivers to shoppers in select parts of Las Vegas, Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, San Diego, San Francisco, London, Seattle and Washington, D.C

Check if Amazon Fresh is Available in Your Area

I decided to give the service a try recently, and here’s what I found.

How Much Does Amazon Fresh Cost?

To start, you’ll need an Amazon Prime membership to access Amazon Fresh, which costs $119 per year.

Previously, the Amazon Fresh service required users to pay $299 up front for a year of service (which included Amazon Prime), but in late 2016, Amazon made it possible to pay $14.99 monthly instead. Then, in October 2019, the company decided to make the base service totally free to Prime subscribers.

As far as the cost of the groceries goes, produce through Amazon Fresh was around 25% to 50% higher than my local Vons grocery store. A bundle of celery, for example, cost $2.49 through Amazon and only $1.99 at Vons.

amazon fresh delivery trucks

On the other hand, packaged products like Doritos cost $4.49 at Vons and just $3.98 on Amazon Fresh, while Philadelphia Cream Cheese was $3.99 at Vons and $2.99 on Amazon Fresh. On average, I found that packaged foods were 15% to 30% cheaper, which helped shift the total average cost closer than I had expected. After comparing several orders, the average cost of goods on Amazon Fresh was less than 10% higher than that of a traditional grocery chain.

How Does Amazon Fresh Work?

If you’re familiar with browsing and shopping on Amazon, you should have no issues locating items in Fresh. Items in the grocery delivery service are broken up into traditional store categories, such as “Breads & Bakery,” “Deli,” “Produce,” etc., and you can even narrow down food results based on things like “Kosher,” “Gluten-Free,” or “Organic.” Here in the Los Angeles area, they even had a section titled “Local Market,” with specialty items from local spots, such as The Cheese Store of Beverly Hills.

Once you have a cart full of Amazon Fresh items, just reserve a delivery time and check out. You’ll be prompted to choose a delivery day (based on availability) and select either “Doorstep Delivery” for a three-hour delivery window which you do not have to be present for, or “Attended Delivery” for a one-hour window when you will be available to take the delivery. Nearly all of the time slots during the week were open for each of my orders, making delivery quite convenient.

Quality of Food and Delivery from Amazon Fresh

I opted for Doorstep Delivery in each of my three test orders and had no issues with the USPS truck rolling up and dropping off our bright green insulated bags. Each Amazon Fresh bag is made of durable plastic and includes ice packs to help keep your produce fresh until you bring the order inside. You can leave delivery bags outside to be picked up during the next order.

The produce quality from Amazon’s food delivery was surprisingly good and packaged in individual plastic bags. I ordered an array of broccoli, tomatoes, carrots, celery, onions, ginger and more. Each and every one was without blemishes, and seemed to be hand picked to make sure it was of the highest quality. Your mileage may vary depending on your location of course, but I had no problems with any produce delivered throughout the month.

However, I did have a problem with a couple items not being available for a week, including packaged broccoli florets and a bag of avocados. This first world problem simply led me to get whole broccoli and abstain from guacamole for a bit. But for the most part, each packaged and produce item showed up without the damage or flaws one might be concerned about with a delivery service.

Amazon Fresh Coupons and Sales

One downside of Amazon Fresh is that they don’t accept traditional coupons like you’d use at most grocery or department stores. However, a growing number of brands are starting to work with Amazon to offer the discounts and bulk deals. The deals seem similar, if not better, than traditional coupons.

For example, we saw a Canada Dry promotion to try their new Ginger Ale and Lemonade for only 1 cent. Other Amazon coupons included a “Buy 2, Save $1” on all Oreo Cookies and a “Buy One, Get One Free” on Gerber organic baby food. There’s even an entire section of the Amazon fresh not delivering site dedicated to Fresh coupons and a weekly Fresh Newsletter that shares the latest deals. You can also see more Amazon Fresh offers with discount up to 50% off here.

Whole Foods on Amazon Fresh

Somewhere around 1,000 Whole Foods products are available to order through Amazon Fresh, with more on the way. Most of them seem to be Whole Foods’ “low cost” 365 Everyday brand. You’ll find that product selection varies quite a lot by category. And luckily, Amazon has added a feature that lets you shop the specific Whole Foods that’s closest to your house, so you don’t need to guess about what’s actually available.

The above table is a price comparison for Amazon Fresh and three other prominent online retailers. While costs and fees are important factors, convenience and availability are crucial aspects you should take into account when deciding which service to use.

Google Express vs Amazon Fresh

Google Express has removed its produce delivery and now only offers dry goods and products from stores like Walmart, Target, Costco and more. The minimum price for orders to include free shipping can vary by store, but is generally a $25 or $35 minimum.

This may seem like a cheaper option, but you have to consider the fee per store and make sure you amazon fresh not delivering spread your orders out across several locations. Additionally, the relatively limited dry goods options and lack of produce may remove this as an option for some shoppers.

Instacart vs Amazon Fresh

Instacart is another popular same-day delivery service operating in an expanding list of cities across the country. Prices range from $5.99 for a two-hour delivery window to $9.99 for a one-hour delivery window. Alternatively, they offer a membership fee of $99 per year to waive the delivery fees.

The annual pricing is a little higher than Amazon Fresh, but it could still be a good option if you live in a region where Amazon Fresh is not amazon fresh not delivering. However, you should keep in mind that Instacart has an atypically high mark up on products compared to other services, and more service fees. And as with Google Express, Instacart charges a delivery fee per store, so it makes the most sense to get everything from one place.

Shipt vs Amazon Fresh

You could also check out the Shipt app, which is growing on the East Coast and amazon fresh not delivering Texas, and offers similar features to Amazon Fresh with a yearly membership for $99 or a monthly membership for $14.

Shipping is free for orders of at least $35, but the company mentions an average product price increase of around 15%. Shipt continues to expand, but with limited stores and the increased cost of groceries, this program may not be the best option for you.

How to Cancel Amazon Fresh

You no longer need to cancel Amazon Fresh because it’s included for free in your Prime Membership. That said, if for some reason you ever need to cancel the grocery delivery service, simply follow these steps to cancel your Amazon Fresh account:

  1. Sign in to Amazon and select “Your Account” under the “Accounts & Lists” section
  2. Check the box that says “Prime – View benefits and payment settings”
  3. Under the Fresh icon, click “Manage Fresh Add-on”
  4. Finally, hit “End Membership” and confirm your decision.

You can follow the same steps to cancel a free trial, all you have to do is hit “Do Not Continue” during step five.

Is Amazon Fresh Worth It?

Now that Amazon Prime includes Amazon Fresh with no delivery fees (assuming each order is at least $35), there’s definitely a lot of appeal for busy folks looking to get their groceries delivered through Amazon.

With reasonable membership fees and one of the biggest available markets, Fresh might just beat out the competition depending on where you live and how you shop. If you are a current Prime member and can get Amazon Fresh in your area, I think it is certainly worth a try.

Amazon has announced that it’s discontinued its Amazon Pantry (originally known as Prime Pantry) service, instead rolling those household goods and shelf-stable pantry items into the main Amazon website where they can be ordered alongside the rest of Amazon’s products.

Originally launched back in 2014, Pantry worked differently from most Amazon orders. Instead of following the usual Amazon delivery rules, Pantry orders charged customers a flat $5.99 shipping fee per box of groceries, which could be filled with up to 45 pounds of products or up to four cubic feet of stuff (whichever limit customers reached first). The focus of the program was to make it easier to stock up on everyday products that would otherwise be bulky or expensive to ship, like bottled water, paper goods, flour, canned food items, boxes of cereal, and more.

Amazon would later slightly change up how Prime Pantry worked in 2018, shifting the service to a $5 per month subscription on top of its regular Prime fees. That price would offer unlimited Pantry orders each month, provided that customers were ordering at least $40 worth of merchandise. Orders below that $40 limit (or for customers, Prime or otherwise, who hadn’t subscribed to Pantry), would instead be charged a flat $7.99 fee.

Despite the fact that Amazon is removing Prime Pantry, the company’s grocery delivery ambitions are still stronger than ever. Amazon now owns Whole Foods, an entire chain of grocery stores, and has started to roll out its own Amazon Fresh-branded stores as well. And the company still offers its Fresh and Whole Foods delivery service for Amazon Prime members (having previously removed the $15 per month subscription fee for that in 2019) that provides grocery delivery in over 2,000 cities in the United States.

In many ways, the original Pantry program was designed to help Amazon compete better with traditional grocery stores — but now that Amazon owns and operates those very same stores (complete with Amazon Prime delivery), the consolidation of Pantry back into the larger Amazon site makes a lot of sense.

Whole Foods Is Now Charging Prime Members Delivery Fees in Some Cities

Amazon puts a lot of effort into getting customers to join its Amazon Prime subscription service. Along with the program's signature free shipping, Amazon has continued to tack on other benefits: Prime Video, Prime Music, Prime Day….And when Whole Foods joined the Amazon family in 2017, the upmarket grocer was tossed into the mix — things like Whole Foods Prime deals and free two-hour delivery. Plus, Amazon has to keep up with itself, so in 2019, Amazon also dropped delivery fees on its own Amazon Fresh grocery service.

Long story short, for years, the freebies have kept piling up, which makes a recent announcement especially surprising: Beginning August 30, Prime members in six cities will now be required to pay a $9.99 fee for Whole Foods delivery. An Amazon spokesperson confirmed that the fees will be launched as part of a new pilot program in the greater Detroit area; the greater Boston area; the greater Chicago area; Portland, Maine; Providence, Rhode Island; and Manchester, New Hampshire.

"This service fee helps to cover operating costs, so we can continue to offer the same competitive everyday prices in-store and online at Whole Foods Market," Amazon stated in a notice sent to customers in the areas, according to Bloomberg.

Amazon reiterated to Food & Wine that their growing delivery business has increased operating costs — with the brand delivering three times as many orders in 2020 as in 2019, and with larger basket sizes per order — so instead of raising the prices of groceries to cover these costs, they've decided to test adding fees to the delivery itself. Amazon also said they believe the fees are comparable to similar services offered by competitors.

Meanwhile, all other Prime benefits at Whole Foods will remain the same, including exclusive Whole Foods Prime deals, an additional 10 percent off all sale items (outside of alcoholic beverages), and 5 percent back with the Amazon Prime Rewards Credit Card. Grocery pickup will also remain free in these areas.

And what about Amazon Fresh deliveries? Though Amazon said that their Fresh service is not available in all of these locations, that service will also remain free.

Google Express vs Amazon Fresh

Google Express has removed its produce delivery and now only offers dry goods and products from stores like Walmart, Target, Costco and more. The minimum price for orders to include free shipping can vary by store, but is generally a $25 or $35 minimum.

This may seem like a cheaper option, but you have to consider the fee per store and make sure you don’t spread your orders out across several locations. Additionally, the relatively limited dry goods options and lack of produce may remove this as an option for some shoppers.

However, you should keep in mind that Instacart has an atypically high mark up on products compared to other services, and more service fees. And as with Google Express, Instacart charges a delivery fee per store, so it makes the most sense to get everything from one place.

Shipt vs Amazon Fresh

You could also check out the Shipt app, which is growing on the East Coast and in Texas, and offers similar features to Amazon Fresh with a yearly membership for $99 or a monthly membership for $14.

Whole Foods is adding a $10 delivery charge, even for Amazon Prime users

CHICAGO -- Amazon Prime users must soon say goodbye to free Whole Foods delivery.

Starting on October 25, every Whole Foods delivery order placed through Amazon Prime will include a $9.95 delivery charge. Amazon Prime members were notified of the change via email Friday, CNN reported.

The new fee is designed to help cover operating costs associated with delivery like equipment and technology without raising grocery prices, a Whole Foods spokesperson said, noting that Whole Foods delivered three times as many orders in 2020 as it did in 2019. Whole Foods piloted the new fee in six markets over the summer - Portland, Maine; Providence, Rhode Island; Manchester, New Hampshire; and the greater Detroit, Boston and Chicago areas - before making the move nationally. There are extra fees for one-hour delivery orders.

RELATED: Amazon stops accepting Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods delivery customers

Amazon acquired Whole Foods in 2017. The following year, it introduced free two-hour delivery from the grocer. Certain perks, like free one-hour grocery pickup, will remain for available to Prime members. The fee also does not apply to customers ordering delivery through Amazon Fresh.

The news comes as American consumers are paying more for food. Grocery prices rose 3% over the past year, according to the latest data measured by the Consumer Price Index, the country's key inflation measure. Restaurant prices rose 4.7% in the same period.

Online shopping for years has been considered immune to rising prices, but that changed in the pandemic. According to an analysis of visits to retail sites by Adobe Digital Economy Index, online prices rose 3.1% in August compared to the same month last year. Grocery was up 1.64%. That compares with an average increase of 0.51% between 2015 and 2019.

Amazon is shutting down its Prime Now two-hour delivery app

Amazon(AMZN) said it was making the move to simplify the shopping experience for Prime Now customers by allowing them to buy groceries and other items, track their orders, and contact customer service from one site.
Customers will still have the option to order delivery in two hours on Amazon's site through Amazon Fresh, which is delivered from Amazon warehouses, and from Whole Foods stores. Amazon purchased Whole Foods in 2017.
Amazon launched its Prime Now app and website in 2014 for speedy deliveries on groceries, household essentials and other items.Amazon also offers one-hour delivery on some items with Prime Now.
Amazon said Friday that it had recently folded the Prime Now offering into the main site in India, Japan and Singapore, and it was a "natural next step" to do so globally.
Amazon has made other changes in recent months to simplify its delivery offerings for customers. Earlier this year, Amazon ended its Prime Pantry delivery subscription service for non-perishable items and moved the items to the main site.
Separately, Amazon is opening new Amazon Fresh grocery stores as it attempts to expand in the grocery industry.
Amazon has opened about a dozen Fresh locations around the United States over the past year, and it says it has plans to open four more stores. Grocery analysts say dozens more could be on deck.
Amazon accounted for 2.8% of the $1.4 trillion grocery market in 2020, UBS analyst Michael Lasser estimated in a research report this month. Lasser expects Amazon's grocery market share to grow to 5.7% by 2025.

What is Amazon Fresh and where can you get grocery deliveries for free?

(Pocket-lint) - Amazon offers a service called Amazon Fresh, it allows users to order groceries online in the UK and, in some areas, it even offers same-day deliveries. What's more, the service is free for Prime members on orders over £40.

This matches the offering in the US, which was made free for Prime subscribers at the end of 2019.

But what is Amazon Fresh and where does it deliver? We answer all your questions below.

What is Amazon Fresh?

Amazon Fresh is the online retailer's grocery shopping service that hosts thousands of food, drinks and household products to be delivered in a two-hour window - even when ordered on the same day.

In the UK, it runs in cooperation with the Morrisons supermarket chain, as well as WholeFoods, Booths and various local shops and markets.

Suppliers in the US vary depending on the city. One neat feature you get in the States is that you can create an Alexa shopping list and add to it by voice throughout the day, then just order hands-free.

Amazon

When does it deliver?

Delivery slots can be selected between 7 am and 11 pm in the UK, with same-day orders available as long as they are booked by 9 pm.

The service is slightly different in the US as time slots and same-day delivery can vary depending on the region.

Where can you get Amazon Fresh deliveries?

In the UK, Amazon Fresh deliveries are currently available across Greater London and several surrounding counties, including regions in Surrey, Hampshire, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire.

You can check the eligible UK postcodes here. However, Amazon eventually hopes to extend Amazon Fresh deliveries to the whole of the UK.

Amazon Fresh is available in "select cities" in the States. You can check whether your region is eligible by heading to the main Fresh page and selecting your delivery zip code in the top-left.

How much does Amazon Fresh cost?

Individual prices for products are competitive, but delivery fees are even better as they have been recently scrapped for Amazon Prime members.

So, with a £79 per year (or £7.99 per month) Prime membership, you can make as many Amazon Fresh orders as you like for no extra cost - as long as they are a minimum of £40 per order.

Under £40 and you'll have to pay the original £3.99 delivery fee. You also pay the delivery fee if you choose to go for a 1-hour delivery slot.

Prime membership in the US costs £119 per year or $12.99 per month. Orders over $35 made by American Prime members will be delivered for free in eligible areas.

It is worth remembering that Prime membership also adds a whole load of other benefits, including free one-day deliveries on millions of Amazon items, Amazon Prime Video streaming, Prime Reading eBooks and many more. You can read about the different services included with Prime here.

How do you use Amazon Fresh?

Using Fresh is easy. Just head to the dedicated section of Amazon, either in the UK here or the US here, and browse for your products. Add them to your basket as normal on Amazon then, when finished, you can checkout - as long as your delivery address is in one of the supported regions.

As Amazon Fresh is part of the regular Amazon Shopping experience, users will need to be careful not to order from Amazon Pantry or the main Amazon Store by accident. An easy way to do this is to ensure that the search bar at the top says "search in Amazon Fresh".
