Have a client with a small store and one product is set to Virtual (https://www.theartboxacademy.com/product/pediatric-hospital-boxes/). We're using Stripe as the payment method and for this product, they don't want the Shipping Address displayed, since there is no shipping address needed.

In Woo, that's not a problem using a function to hide the Shipping Address area. But if the customer uses Apple, Google or Amazon Pay, the modal that appears brings up a Shipping Address section,, even for virtual products.

Is there some way to hide this part for virtual products only?

Amazon Cash's secret weapon is the Apple wallet

Amazon is lending its considerable brand and heft to a cash payment model that borrows a vital piece of real estate from Apple Pay.

Called Amazon Cash, the feature allows cash-carrying consumers to add funds to their Amazon.com balance by presenting a bar code to a cashier at a network of partner retailers. Users tell the clerk how much cash to add, between $15 and $500 at once, and the funds arrive instantly in an Amazon.com stored-value account.

Systems like this are not new, and earlier models relied on consumers setting up a cash load online and then presenting a printed receipt, as was the case when Walmart introduced a similar service in 2012. Amazon's twist is keeping the experience decidedly digital, allowing consumers to store a reusable Amazon Cash bar code in Apple's wallet app or on the home screen of Android devices.

Amazon Cash debuted Monday in the U.S., and the initial retailers include CVS, Speedway, Sheetz, Kum & Go, D&W Fresh Market, Family Fare Supermarkets and VG's Grocery.

Besides bearing similarities to Walmart's Pay with Cash service, Amazon Cash also resembles PayPal's MyCash card, which charges a nominal fee upfront for digital in-store prepaid loads to PayPal's account, and is a major part of PayPal's efforts to build a market among underbanked consumers. The key differences for Amazon: There are no consumer fees, and there is no physical card.

"It's a bit of a defeat for PayPal, which is increasingly catering to the needs of the unbanked and would had loved to do a deal with Amazon to enable the unbanked to purchase there," said Rick Oglesby, president of AZ Payments Group.

Amazon Cash also shares traits with PayNearMe, which works with a similar network of retailers but markets its service more for bill payment than e-commerce. Amazon's service could also be an alternative to prepaid card companies such as Netspend and Green Dot, whose products can give unbanked consumers access to e-commerce.

"Amazon's service is open to anyone who has a mobile phone," said Richard Crone, a payments consultant. The system adds authentication through the phone credentials, the Amazon login and the consumer showing his or her phone at the retailer, he noted. "It pushes the entire prepaid market to up its game."

Amazon can also pair the program with its strategy to build a brick and mortar footprint by tying some elements of traditional retail with its e-commerce brand. Amazon is building Go, an experimental store that doesn't require a checkout, instead using in-store sensors to charge a user's Amazon account for in-store shopping. Amazon is also opening a chain of bookstores, and is expanding its distribution and fulfillment network in the U.S.

Amazon did not reveal terms of its deals with retailers, and did not return a request for comment by deadline.

The launch of Amazon Cash comes at an unwelcome time for the traditional brick-and-mortar industry, as Amazon becomes larger than most big-box chains combined, and many big-box chains face traffic slumps and closures.

"Consumers can access to Amazon for whatever you want to buy. And if Amazon takes this to its move to open stores, they can squeeze out even more," Crone said. "It would be like Trader Joe's for Amazon."

The e-commerce giant is working to persuade brick-and-mortar merchants to accept its Amazon Pay digital wallet, according to people familiar with the matter, attempting to expand a service now used primarily for purchases online.

To begin with, the company is looking to work with petrol stations, restaurants and other merchants that aren’t direct competitors. Retailers that view Amazon as a threat could resist the effort.

The push to become a bigger player in consumer payments shows Amazon’s desire to further integrate itself into the lives of its customers. It isn’t clear exactly how customers would use Amazon Pay in stores: They could tap their phones at checkout, much the same way they use Apple Pay, or scan a code on their phones, among other options.

Apple says Apple Pay was accepted at more than 5 million in-store locations in the US as of May, and the number of merchants accepting its wallet is growing.

US consumers have been slow to adopt digital wallets, which were responsible for less than 1% of  all US card transactions last year, according to the Nilson Report. Amazon is looking to Asia, where digital wallets and mobile-payment apps like Alipay and WeChat Pay are commonly used.

Amazon executives want to gobble up the US market while the competition remains fairly minimal, according to people familiar with their thinking. An Amazon spokeswoman declined to comment.

Consumers typically load their debit or credit card account to a digital wallet, and click the wallet tab on a merchant’s website to make an online payment. With wallets capable of in-store payments, consumers hold a phone above a contactless checkout terminal to transmit the card information. Merchants that accept wallets generally don’t pay additional fees beyond what they pay for card payments.

Apple Card stops working on Amazon for some, fix in the works [U]

A curious issue is affecting Apple Card users when it comes to using the credit card at Amazon. Some are reporting that not only is Apple Card not working at the retail giant, but it’s also disappearing from their saved payment options.


Update: An Amazon spokesperson shared the following statement with us: “We are aware of this technical issue and are actively working to resolve it as soon as possible.”

Meanwhile, another 9to5Mac reader reached out and shared a screenshot of a chat with Apple support that said they are also working with Amazon on a fix: “We are aware that Apple Card users are unable to make purchases at Amazon. This issue is specific to Amazon and we are working to resolve it.”


Brought up by reddit user Horse_Dad2, Amazon is having trouble with Apple Card as a payment method. They mention they’ve been using it successfully up until today but it was automatically removed from their Amazon payment options.

Horse_Dad2 also notes that Amazon kicks out an error message when trying to re-add the card. It’s hard to tell what’s really going on at this point, but an Amazon support rep said it had to do with Amazon interpreting Apple Card numbers as Apple Pay:

When I finally got someone from amazon on the phone, I was told that it was because their systems are starting to recognize the card number as Apple Pay, and amazon does not accept Apple Pay.

Others on reddit confirmed they’re seeing the same problem.

There was a problem. We’re sorry, we weren’t able to save your credit card information. Please enter it again or try using another form of payment.

Another added: “Same here- I used mine Wednesday and now it’s gone from my saved payments in Amazon.”

Here at 9to5Mac, we’re seeing the same problem, however, it may not be an issue across the board as one of us isn’t seeing the issue (at least for now).

Amazon Pay Is Growing Fast -- Should PayPal and Apple Pay Be Worried?

Although it's been around for some time, Amazon's (NASDAQ:AMZN) digital wallet, Amazon Pay, is just starting to surge in popularity on bank of america stadium seating websites. While Industry Focus: Financials host Jason Moser believes PayPal(NASDAQ:PYPL) and Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) Pay have clear technological advantages, Fool.com contributor Matt Frankel, CFP, thinks that Amazon's familiarity gives it an advantage as more consumers adopt digital wallets in the coming years.

Jason Moser: Let's kick right off here talking about Amazon. There are a few different points to this discussion we want to get to. We're talking primarily about Amazon's effort to gain more share in the payments space. That's through Amazon Pay. We can couple this discussion also with the fact that according to Adobe Analytics, Black Friday pulled in a record $6.22 billion in online sales, which was up almost 24% from a year ago. It was the first day in history to see more than $2 billion in sales stemming from smartphones. That's where I really want to pick this conversation up here. Not only are we living in an e-commerce world, we're certainly living in a mobile world, as well.

For a lot of us, Amazon Pay probably isn't top of mind, yet we're reading now that they're really making efforts to gain share, it seems like initially with companies that are not necessarily direct competitors, like gas stations or restaurants or what have you. It does seem like they're trying to take a little bit more of that role in the transaction, much like we've seen Apple do to date with Apple Pay. But it's also not just Apple. There are all these payments companies out there, trying to get a little piece of that transaction.

Talk a little bit about your experience with Amazon Pay. Give us a little bit of your perspective here as to what the endgame is with Amazon.

Matt Frankel: I was on a certain retailer's website. I can't tell you what I bought, or who I bought it from, because it my heritage online login an anniversary gift for my wife, who listens to apple pay to amazon show.

Moser: Oh, so you really can't. I was going to say, "You can't, or you won't?" But it's both.

Frankel: I really can't. It was a small business, something you would see featured on Shark Tank. It struck me as somewhere that gets most of their sales from Amazon to begin with. This was directly on their website. I went to check out, they were having a great Black Friday custom t shirt design online free. I went to their website, selected my products, and went to the checkout. And there were two apple pay to amazon. There was a PayPal button and an Amazon Pay button. I was curious, because I had never seen that on a merchant's website. Amazon really hasn't pushed it until recently. So, I clicked Amazon Pay, and it took me right to my Amazon checkout, where I have my Amazon credit card already set up. It was just like checking out for a normal Amazon purchase. It took me about two clicks. It was very easy. I was actually going to use PayPal, and I like this alternative because it lets me keep all my purchases in one place. I'd say about 50% of what my wife and I order is already through Amazon. It lets me organize my purchases into one payment portal. I actually think PayPal might have something to worry about here.

Moser: That's a good perspective there. I want to ask you, the initial thing that comes to mind here where I think they may have a little bit of a challenge, we know that to date, the U.S. consumer isn't necessarily all that digital-wallet-focused yet. That's still something that we're in the very nascent stages of, and I think it's going to take a while for that behavior to really change. You look at something like Apple Pay, does capital one have personal loans example, as clever as that is, consumers still aren't embracing that wholeheartedly. Whether it's Apple Pay or Google Pay or Amazon Pay, the digital wallet, there's a big opportunity there. That explains why Amazon is pursuing this.

The one hang-up here I have with Amazon and the process that you just described, it sounds like there's a little bit more friction in there vs. if I go somewhere, whatever website it may be, and I have the option to pay with Apple Pay. When it says, "Do you want to use Apple Pay?" And apple pay to amazon can just use your thumbprint to verify the transaction, as opposed to having to go to another website and verify that purchase. What I'm getting at here is ultimately, it feels like Apple, and to a degree Google, have a hardware advantage that Amazon doesn't have to date. Does that make sense?

Frankel: Yes, but here's my perspective on that. I don't necessarily think this will steal any market share from people who are already on Apple Pay or PayPal. Both of those are, like you said, very easy portals. They both have hardware advantages over Amazon. But there are a lot of people who are not using digital wallets yet who are already comfortable with Amazon's checkout process. I don't necessarily think they're going to steal market share or steal existing customers from any of the other ones, but I do think it gives cash back debit card an advantage recruiting new adopters to digital wallets.

Moser: Probably, you're right. We talk about this all the time, this is not a zero-sum game. It's not as if one wins and everybody else loses. This is a massive opportunity out there. At the end of the day, money is going everywhere. That's what dictates everything, basically, is money getting from point A to point B. Pursuing even just a small piece of that pie makes a lot of sense, particularly in Amazon's case, because really, you have to figure for them, this is a very easy bet to make. The business certainly isn't hinging on it. At the most, they get a tiny scrape of that transaction. When Apple Pay is used, Apple gets a very, very tiny scrape of that transaction. It's not terribly meaningful. It becomes meaningful if you have a billion people using it on a consistent basis. And obviously, we're not to that point yet. But even apple pay to amazon the financial implications, I would imagine that a company like Amazon, as smart as they are about using data and doing things with that data, just gleaning the data apple pay to amazon transactions like these would be seen as a reasonable pay-off.

Frankel: Right, and that seems to really be what they're apple pay to amazon here. I've actually read that Amazon is subsidizing the swipe fees for merchants -- not swipe fees, but whatever the swipe-fee-equivalent of digital wallet fees are. They're actually subsidizing the fees to get retailers to put the Amazon Pay button on their website at a lower cost to them. It's fair to say Amazon's not making money on this, but it's expanding apple pay to amazon reach. Anything that expands Amazon's reach, data-wise, customer-wise, merchant-wise, is good for the long-term business.

Moser: Makes sense to me. I don't think Amazon's going to ever going to have a hardware advantage at least on the smartphone side. They tried with the Fire phone. They were late to the game, tried to do something a little bit different, but there was nothing terribly compelling to get someone to switch, particularly if you're already used to a certain operating system. I'm also skeptical when it comes to incorporating things like voice assistant technology into actually paying for things.

With all that said, things change very quickly. Technology is evolving seemingly on a daily basis. I'm going to be interested to see where Amazon takes this. Amazon Pay has been around for a while, they just haven't done much with it. Perhaps we're entering this stage now where consumers are going to be a bit more open to adopting digital payments and digital wallets and whatnot. If that's the case, clearly we can see there's a lot of market share there to pick up. American express delta credit card sign in Amazon to try to be a part of that makes perfect sense.

Frankel: To be perfectly clear, PayPal, Amazon Pay, and Apple Pay all have tremendous growth runways. PayPal's growth rate could go from 20% to 19%. I'm not saying they're going to really suffer. To be clear, I still love PayPal on a long-term basis.

Moser: Gotcha! We want to make sure we respond to the inevitable email we're going to get. We're not saying, "Short PayPal, long Amazon." You're probably saying go long on both, right? It's reasonable to just diversify your portfolio, own shares in both companies.

Frankel: Right. Both companies are going to be winners. I could just see the tweetstorm going off in my head when I was saying that.

Moser: Well, we'll get out in front of it if that does happen.

After Amazon and WhatsApp, Apple orders ‘stop payment'

Silicon Valley giant Apple has shelved plans to launch a Unified Payments Interface-based payments platform in India after landing in a regulatory grey zone that has stalled the full rollouts of similar products by Amazon and WhatsApp as well.

Apple put the brakes on introducing Apple Payin the country despite holding discussions with a few leading banks and the National Payments Corporation of India, which manages the UPI platform, said two people with knowledge of the matter.

The main worry for Apple is the Reserve Bank of India’s recent data localisation rule, they said, adding that the company also ran into technical and design hurdles related to the flow of payments on UPI. “Apple will not launch payments in India yet. They are waiting to see how the regulatory landscape shapes up,” one of them said.

RBI’s data localisation rule that requires companies to store all their payments data only within India has made uncertain the plans of other multinational companies as well, including Mastercard, Visa, Amazon, WhatsApp and How to open a bank account.

Even Google, which has laid out aggressive plans for its UPI-linked payments platform in India, has said it is assessing the evolving situation around data localisation.

Apple did not reply to emailed queries on the matter.

Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice-president for internet software and services, had told ET in October that the company was looking to bring Apple Pay to the Indian market. “It is great that all of these payment mechanisms are coming out in India because it empowers people to be able to pay. What Apple Pay does is make that process easy, integrated and safe. We absolutely want to bring Apple Pay to the market here,” he said in the interview last year.

One of the two people mentioned earlier said Apple was expecting to launch its payment service in India a couple of months ago. However, a third person aware of the developments said there was no specific timeline for the launch of Apple Pay in India.

Apple Pay is available in Australia, Canada, Mainland China, France, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, the UK, the US, and Taiwan.

Elaborating on the design hurdles, a banker said Apple wanted to include fingerprint as a mode of authentication for UPI payments, which NPCI did not agree to. UPI requires customers to enter a sixor four-digit number to authenticate transactions.

“NPCI has prescribed that transactions can be authenticated by biometrics only when they get validated by UIDAI,” said the banker. “NPCI does not allow biometrics collected by devices as a mode of authentication.”

Procedural guidelines prescribed by NPCI clearly state that authentication using biometrics or Iris recognition will have to be validated by the UIDAI which issues the biometrics-based Aadhaar digital identity numbers.

Apple has had a few rough months in India recently, losing some top executives here and running into an impasse with the telecom regulator over supporting its do-not-disturb app. Last month, the iPhone maker agreed to include apple pay to amazon 75% of the features of the DND app in its new operating system.

Amazon’s plan to launch its own UPI payment service in the country is also stuck due to concerns over the data localisation rule, ET reported last month. WhatsApp, which a few months ago began piloting a payments feature on its popular messaging app, too, has put on hold its plans to go fully live on UPI. Industry experts have voiced concerns about the regulatory hurdles in the payments space for both domestic and global companies.

“The Ratan Watal committee had apple pay to amazon important regulatory reforms to unlock the potential of digital payments in India in December 2016 but there has been little progress since,” said Ashish Aggarwal, head, public policy, at IT industry body Nasscom. “If we want to create a truly competitive and predictable regulatory framework in payments, the committee’s recommendations must be implemented.”

Amazon Cash's secret weapon is the Apple wallet

Amazon is lending its considerable brand and heft to a cash payment model that borrows a vital piece of real estate from Apple Pay.

Called Amazon Cash, the feature allows cash-carrying consumers to add funds to their Amazon.com balance by presenting a bar code to a cashier at a network of partner retailers. Users tell the clerk how much cash to add, between $15 and $500 at once, and the funds arrive instantly in an Amazon.com stored-value account.

Systems like this are not new, and earlier models relied on consumers setting up a cash load online and then presenting a printed receipt, as was the case when Walmart introduced a similar service in 2012. Amazon's twist is keeping the experience decidedly digital, allowing consumers to store a reusable Amazon Cash bar code in Apple's wallet app or on the home screen of Android devices.

Amazon Cash debuted Monday in the U.S., and the initial retailers include CVS, Speedway, Sheetz, Kum & Go, D&W Fresh Market, Family Fare Supermarkets and VG's Grocery.

Besides bearing similarities to Walmart's Pay with Cash service, Amazon Cash also resembles PayPal's MyCash card, which charges a nominal fee upfront for digital in-store prepaid loads to PayPal's account, and is a major part of PayPal's efforts to build a market among underbanked consumers. The key differences for Amazon: There are no consumer fees, and there is no physical card.

"It's a bit of a defeat for PayPal, which is increasingly catering meredith village savings bank alton nh the needs of the unbanked and would had loved to do a deal with Amazon to enable the unbanked to purchase there," said Rick Oglesby, president of AZ Payments Group.

Amazon Cash also shares traits with PayNearMe, which works with a similar network of retailers but markets its service more for bill payment than e-commerce. Amazon's service could also be an alternative to prepaid card companies such as Netspend and Green Dot, whose products can give unbanked consumers access to e-commerce.

"Amazon's service is open to anyone who has a mobile phone," said Richard Crone, a payments consultant. The system adds authentication through the phone credentials, the Amazon login and the consumer showing his or her phone at the retailer, he noted. "It pushes the entire prepaid market to up its game."

Amazon can also pair the program with its strategy to build a brick and mortar footprint by tying some apple pay to amazon of traditional retail with its e-commerce brand. Amazon is building Go, an experimental store that doesn't require a checkout, instead using in-store sensors to charge a user's Amazon account for in-store shopping. Amazon is also opening a chain of bookstores, and is expanding its distribution and fulfillment network in the U.S.

Amazon did not reveal terms of its deals with retailers, and did not return a request for comment by deadline.

The launch of Amazon Cash comes at an unwelcome time for the traditional brick-and-mortar industry, as Amazon becomes larger than most big-box chains combined, and many big-box chains face traffic slumps and closures.

WooCommerce: Don't display Shipping Addreess on virtual products in Apple, Google or Amazon Pay

Have a client with a small store and one product is set to Virtual (https://www.theartboxacademy.com/product/pediatric-hospital-boxes/). We're using Stripe as the payment method and for this product, they don't want the Shipping Address displayed, since there is no shipping address needed.

In Woo, that's not a problem using a function to hide the Shipping Address area. But if the customer uses Apple, Google or Amazon Pay, the modal that appears brings up a Shipping Address section,, even for virtual products.

Is there some way to hide this part for virtual products only?

Apple Card stops working on Amazon for some, fix in the works [U]

A curious issue is affecting Apple Card users when it comes to using the credit card at Amazon. Some are reporting that not only is Apple Card not working at the retail giant, but it’s also disappearing from their saved payment options.


Update: An Amazon spokesperson shared the following statement with us: “We are aware of this technical issue and are actively working to resolve it as soon as possible.”

Meanwhile, another 9to5Mac reader reached out and shared a screenshot of a chat with Apple support that said they are also working with Amazon on a fix: “We are aware that Apple Card users are unable to make purchases at Amazon. This issue is specific to Amazon and we are working to resolve it.”


Brought up by reddit user Horse_Dad2, Amazon is having trouble with Apple Card as a payment method. They mention they’ve been using it successfully up until today but it was automatically removed from their Amazon payment options.

Horse_Dad2 also notes that Amazon kicks out an error message when trying to re-add the card. It’s hard to tell what’s really going on at this point, but an Amazon support rep said it had to do with Amazon interpreting Apple Card numbers as Apple Pay:

When I finally got someone from amazon on the phone, I was told that it was because their systems are starting to recognize the card number as Apple Pay, and amazon does not accept Apple Pay.

Others on reddit confirmed they’re seeing the same problem.

Just checked as well. My Apple Card has been removed from my Amazon Wallet. Tried to re-add it and getting this error
There was a problem. We’re sorry, we weren’t able to save your credit card information. Please enter it again or try using another form of payment.

Another added: “Same here- I used mine Wednesday and now it’s gone from my saved payments in Amazon.”

Here at 9to5Mac, we’re seeing the same problem, however, it may not be an issue across the board as one of us isn’t seeing the issue (at least for now).

The e-commerce giant is working to persuade brick-and-mortar merchants to accept its Amazon Pay digital wallet, according to people familiar with the matter, attempting to expand a service now used primarily for purchases online.

To begin with, the company is looking to work with petrol stations, restaurants and other merchants that aren’t direct competitors. Retailers that view Amazon as a threat could resist the effort.

The push to become a bigger player in consumer payments shows Amazon’s desire to further integrate itself into the lives of its customers. It isn’t clear exactly how customers would use Amazon Pay in stores: They could tap their phones at checkout, much the same way they use Apple Pay, or scan a code on their phones, among other options.

Apple says Apple Pay was accepted at more than 5 million in-store locations in the US as of May, and the number of merchants accepting its wallet is growing.

US consumers have been slow to adopt digital wallets, which were responsible for less than 1% of  all US card transactions last year, according to the Nilson Report. Amazon is looking to Asia, where digital wallets and mobile-payment apps like Alipay and WeChat Pay are commonly used.

Amazon executives want to gobble up the US market while the competition remains fairly minimal, according to people familiar with their thinking. An Amazon spokeswoman declined to comment.

Consumers typically load their debit or credit card account to a digital wallet, and click the wallet tab on a merchant’s website to make an online payment. With wallets capable of in-store payments, consumers hold a phone above a contactless checkout terminal to transmit the card information. Merchants that accept wallets generally don’t pay additional fees beyond what they pay for card payments.

Amazon added Apple Pay support today for its Amazon.com Rewards Visa.

Since Chase, the Amazon rewards card issuer, was an Apple Pay launch partner, some speculated that Amazon intentionally opted out of Apple’s mobile payments system. But Amazon quickly confirmed this week that it was working on adding support for its credit card in the near future. Now it’s followed through.

When adding an Amazon Rewards card in Apple Pay, an additional confirmation code is required to validate the card with Chase. The code can be sent via email, text message or phone call and added in Passbook’s Apple Pay settings.

Yesterday, Visa published a list of regional U.S. banks and credit unions that will get Apple Pay support in the coming weeks, and MasterCard’s Nearby app is a great tool for finding NFC terminals that support the service.

Apple has a helpful breakdown of which financial institutions support Apple Pay for specific kinds of cards. The most notable exemption from Apple Pay is support for corporate credit cards and loyalty cards for merchants. Apple is rumored to announce an Apple Pay rewards platform in time for the holidays.

Amazon Pay Is Growing Fast -- Should PayPal and Apple Pay Be Worried?

Although it's been around for some time, Amazon's (NASDAQ:AMZN) digital wallet, Amazon Pay, is just starting to surge in popularity on merchant websites. While Industry Focus: Financials host Jason Moser believes PayPal(NASDAQ:PYPL) and Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) Pay have clear technological advantages, Fool.com contributor Matt Frankel, CFP, thinks that Amazon's familiarity gives it an advantage as more consumers adopt digital wallets in the coming years.

Jason Moser: Let's kick right off here talking about Amazon. There are a few different points to this discussion we want to get to. We're talking primarily about Amazon's effort to gain more share in the payments space. That's through Amazon Pay. We can couple this discussion also with the fact that according to Adobe Analytics, Black Friday pulled in a record $6.22 billion in online sales, which was up almost 24% from a year ago. It was the first day in history to see more than $2 billion in sales stemming from smartphones. That's where I really want to pick this conversation up here. Not only are we living in an e-commerce world, we're certainly living in a mobile world, as well.

For a lot of us, Amazon Pay probably isn't top of mind, yet we're reading now that they're really making efforts to gain share, it seems like initially with companies that are not necessarily direct competitors, like gas stations or restaurants or what have you. It does seem like they're trying to take a little bit more of that role in the transaction, much like we've seen Apple do to date with Apple Pay. But it's also not just Apple. There are all these payments companies out there, trying to get a little piece of that transaction.

Talk a little bit about your experience with Amazon Pay. Give us a little bit of your perspective here as to what the endgame is with Amazon.

Matt Frankel: I was on a certain retailer's website. I can't tell you what I bought, or who I bought it from, because it was an anniversary gift for my wife, who listens to the show.

Moser: Oh, so you really can't. I was going to say, "You can't, or you won't?" But it's both.

Frankel: I really can't. It was a small business, something you would see featured on Shark Tank. It struck me as somewhere that gets most of their sales from Amazon to begin with. This was directly on their website. I went to check out, they were having a great Black Friday sale. I went to their website, selected my products, and went to the checkout. And there were two buttons. There was a PayPal button and an Amazon Pay button. I was curious, because I had never seen that on a merchant's website. Amazon really hasn't pushed it until recently. So, I clicked Amazon Pay, and it took me right to my Amazon checkout, where I have my Amazon credit card already set up. It was just like checking out for a normal Amazon purchase. It took me about two clicks. It was very easy. I was actually going to use PayPal, and I like this alternative because it lets me keep all my purchases in one place. I'd say about 50% of what my wife and I order is already through Amazon. It lets me organize my purchases into one payment portal. I actually think PayPal might have something to worry about here.

Moser: That's a good perspective there. I want to ask you, the initial thing that comes to mind here where I think they may have a little bit of a challenge, we know that to date, the U.S. consumer isn't necessarily all that digital-wallet-focused yet. That's still something that we're in the very nascent stages of, and I think it's going to take a while for that behavior to really change. You look at something like Apple Pay, for example, as clever as that is, consumers still aren't embracing that wholeheartedly. Whether it's Apple Pay or Google Pay or Amazon Pay, the digital wallet, there's a big opportunity there. That explains why Amazon is pursuing this.

The one hang-up here I have with Amazon and the process that you just described, it sounds like there's a little bit more friction in there vs. if I go somewhere, whatever website it may be, and I have the option to pay with Apple Pay. When it says, "Do you want to use Apple Pay?" And you can just use your thumbprint to verify the transaction, as opposed to having to go to another website and verify that purchase. What I'm getting at here is ultimately, it feels like Apple, and to a degree Google, have a hardware advantage that Amazon doesn't have to date. Does that make sense?

Frankel: Yes, but here's my perspective on that. I don't necessarily think this will steal any market share from people who are already on Apple Pay or PayPal. Both of those are, like you said, very easy portals. They both have hardware advantages over Amazon. But there are a lot of people who are not using digital wallets yet who are already comfortable with Amazon's checkout process. I don't necessarily think they're going to steal market share or steal existing customers from any of the other ones, but I do think it gives them an advantage recruiting new adopters to digital wallets.

Moser: Probably, you're right. We talk about this all the time, this is not a zero-sum game. It's not as if one wins and everybody else loses. This is a massive opportunity out there. At the end of the day, money is going everywhere. That's what dictates everything, basically, is money getting from point A to point B. Pursuing even just a small piece of that pie makes a lot of sense, particularly in Amazon's case, because really, you have to figure for them, this is a very easy bet to make. The business certainly isn't hinging on it. At the most, they get a tiny scrape of that transaction. When Apple Pay is used, Apple gets a very, very tiny scrape of that transaction. It's not terribly meaningful. It becomes meaningful if you have a billion people using it on a consistent basis. And obviously, we're not to that point yet. But even beyond the financial implications, I would imagine that a company like Amazon, as smart as they are about using data and doing things with that data, just gleaning the data from transactions like these would be seen as a reasonable pay-off.

Frankel: Right, and that seems to really be what they're after here. I've actually read that Amazon is subsidizing the swipe fees for merchants -- not swipe fees, but whatever the swipe-fee-equivalent of digital wallet fees are. They're actually subsidizing the fees to get retailers to put the Amazon Pay button on their website at a lower cost to them. It's fair to say Amazon's not making money on this, but it's expanding their reach. Anything that expands Amazon's reach, data-wise, customer-wise, merchant-wise, is good for the long-term business.

Moser: Makes sense to me. I don't think Amazon's going to ever going to have a hardware advantage at least on the smartphone side. They tried with the Fire phone. They were late to the game, tried to do something a little bit different, but there was nothing terribly compelling to get someone to switch, particularly if you're already used to a certain operating system. I'm also skeptical when it comes to incorporating things like voice assistant technology into actually paying for things.

With all that said, things change very quickly. Technology is evolving seemingly on a daily basis. I'm going to be interested to see where Amazon takes this. Amazon Pay has been around for a while, they just haven't done much with it. Perhaps we're entering this stage now where consumers are going to be a bit more open to adopting digital payments and digital wallets and whatnot. If that's the case, clearly we can see there's a lot of market share there to pick up. For Amazon to try to be a part of that makes perfect sense.

Frankel: To be perfectly clear, PayPal, Amazon Pay, and Apple Pay all have tremendous growth runways. PayPal's growth rate could go from 20% to 19%. I'm not saying they're going to really suffer. To be clear, I still love PayPal on a long-term basis.

Moser: Gotcha! We want to make sure we respond to the inevitable email we're going to get. We're not saying, "Short PayPal, long Amazon." You're probably saying go long on both, right? It's reasonable to just diversify your portfolio, own shares in both companies.

Frankel: Right. Both companies are going to be winners. I could just see the tweetstorm going off in my head when I was saying that.

Moser: Well, we'll get out in front of it if that does happen.
