What is an IBAN?

To make and receive payments overseas you'll have to use an International Bank Account Number (IBAN). 

An IBAN is always used in conjunction with a Bank Identifier Code (BIC) - a sequence of numbers and letters which identifies a bank and branch.

An IBAN will be between 15 and 28 characters in length, depending on the country where the account is held. UK IBANs are 22 characters long.

In printed form, the number is frequently split into groups of four characters, making it easier to read. When it is used electronically it shouldn't contain blank spaces or the word IBAN. For example:

While the electronic equivalent would look like this: GB99RBOS12345612345678

IBANs and BICs are used throughout the European Union, European Economic Area and Switzerland. They should be used on all payments to and from these countries.

You must always quote the IBAN and BIC of the beneficiary. Don't give extra information - such as account numbers or bank names as this can cause problems with the payment.

You can also use IBAN and BIC to make currency payments within the UK. But if you're simply making sterling payments in the UK, you should use sort codes and account numbers.

If you're receiving funds:

  • Give the payer your IBAN and BIC
  • Don't provide any other information (such as your account number or address)

Although it's not essential, you can also provide your IBAN and BIC for payments being received from other countries.

All the EU countries have different ways of expressing account numbers and formats for making domestic payments. Handling drafts and cheques

While we don't usually recommend drafts and cheques, a basic principle that you can apply to make the process as simple and cost efficient as possible is to include multiple Sterling cheques and drafts in the same transaction. These need to be in the same currency, drawn on bank or building society branches based in the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man or Gibraltar, for negotiation.

If a cheque or draft is the only way that you're able to receive payments from overseas, please note that we can only clear these payments if they're made in Sterling by an issuer, bank or building society branch based in the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man or Gibraltar.

Please note that we're unable to accept:

  • deposits made to your account in non-Sterling cheques, international or domestic drafts or travellers cheque deposits from any issuer

Will you take the money from my account for an international payment right away?

For Payments made in foreign currency before 4:30pm on a business day, your account will be debited the same working day. For payments made on or after 4:30pm on a business day, your account will be debited the next working day. Payments submitted on or after 4:30pm on a Friday (as long as Friday is a working day) will be debited the next working day, please note Saturdays, Sundays and Bank holidays are not classed as working days.

What is a transfer charge?

This is our upfront charge to you for making an international payment. Please note that while you will pay our transfer charges, the person receiving the payment pays all other charges. This may result in the person receiving the payment receiving a lesser amount than you have sent, or these charges may be debited from their account separately. Other charging options are available in branch or via telephone banking. Our international payments calculator is available to you after you've logged into Internet Banking to demonstrate how much each payment will cost.

How many international payments can I make each day?

International payment limits are set by each account and not for each individual customer. You can make any number of payments up to a total amount of £75,000 per account per day.

Can I make more than one payment to the same recipient each day?

Yes. You can make as many payments as you want as long as you don't go over your daily payment transaction limit of £75,000 and you have enough money in your account to make payments.

What is a clearing code?

Why have I received less than the sender sent?

The sender can either choose to pay all the charges themselves, share the charges with you or for you to pay all the charges. This will affect how much you receive. 
 
The amount received will also depend on who converts the currency. If the sender sends the payment in local currency (i.e. Euros or US Dollars) then TSB will convert into Pounds. We do this based on our own daily rates. These rates will be linked to live industry exchange rates. Rates can change by the minute, without the sending bank knowing what our rate is, they won’t be able to tell you what the exchange rate will be. This can make it hard to predict exactly what will arrive in Pounds sterling. 
 
If the overseas sender requests the payment is sent in Pounds sterling then the overseas bank will make the conversion based on their own rates, the sender should be made aware of this at the time they make the transaction. How much money you can send will vary depending on the method of transfer you choose. There are also daily, weekly and monthly transfer limits.

Here are some simple steps for how to view your transfer limits:

EasyWeb

  1. Log in to Easy Web
  2. Select the TD Global Transfer link in the left-hand menu
  3. Select the "What are my sending limits" link on the top right-hand corner of the Quote screen
  4. A static limits page will be displayed outlining the aggregate limits for TD Global Transfer as well as the limits per method of transfer - Western Union®, Visa Direct, Global Bank Transfer

TD app

  1. Access 'Transfers' from the main screen or the left menu
  2. Select Send Money and then the Globally tab
  3. Select the Country in which your recipient will receive the funds. Use the drop down menu
  4. Once you select the country, at the bottom of the screen, select the "What are my sending limits" link. A static limits page will be displayed outlining the aggregate limits for TD Global Transfer as well as the limits per method of transfer - Western Union, Visa Direct, Global Bank Transfer

There are no limits to the number of transfers you can send each day, as long as their total dollar value does not exceed the maximum dollar amount allowed in the time period noted above.

Depending on the method of money transfer, the estimated arrival time for your transfer will differ, and will be displayed to you during your transfer and on the transfer receipt.

  • TD Global Bank Transfer: 1-54 business days.
  • Western Union: 2-4 hours 3
  • Visa: 24-48 hours 4,5

If your money transfer hasn’t arrived in the specified estimated delivery time, please check the status of the transfer, ask your recipient to contact their local institution regarding their transfer, or please call TD at 1-844-352-11481-844-352-1148.

There could be a number of reasons your recipient hasn't received their bank transfer within the expected timescale, including:

  • We may require extra information from you, before your transfer is processed.
  • We may need extra information from the recipient (such as ID).

Failure to respond to our request for more information may result in your transaction being rejected. If your transaction is rejected for whatever reason, you can expect the money to return to your account in 3-5 business days.

To cancel your Western Union® Money TransferSM simply follow these steps:

EasyWeb

  1. Log in to EasyWeb
  2. Select TD Global Transfer in the left-hand menu to see a list of recent transactions
  3. Select the Transaction Details, of the Western Union® Money TransferSM you want to cancel
  4. Select Cancel Transfer from the options

A Western Union® Money TransferSM cannot be cancelled within the first hour of being sent, when the transaction is being validated, or after recipient has picked up their funds.

Once the transfer has been cancelled, it can take up to 5 business days for funds to be returned to your account. If it’s taking more than 5 days, don’t hesitate to call us at 1-844-352-1148.

Also, after you send to an eligible card or a recipient’s bank account and it has been confirmed, it cannot be cancelled.

The fees for sending a TD Global Transfer will depend on the country you’re sending to, as well as the method of money transfer you select.

These fees will be displayed to you after you select get estimate on the Quote page. You will be able to compare fees across the methods of money transfer. You can also access information about TD Global Transfer fees in the About our Accounts section of the TD website:

To Get Started, You Will Need:

  • An RBC chequing or savings account6
  • Be enrolled in RBC Online Banking or the RBC Mobile app

Canadian banks do not have IBAN (International Bank Account Number) numbers. If asked for the RBC IBAN number it is simply our Bank Number (003) followed by your account number and your branch's transit number. Please be aware that the IBAN is different than the SWIFT BIC which is used for incoming wires. For RBC, the SWIFT BIC code is ROYCCAT2.

You can find what you need for RBC's IBAN on the bottom of your personalized cheques or in RBC Online Banking.

Your 5-digit RBC Royal Bank account transit number is the first 5 digits of the full account number displayed with your accounts in RBC Online Banking (including all zeros)

The daily limit is $2,500. You can use the service as how to do international bank transfer as you like, provided you don't exceed the daily limit and there are enough funds in the account.

Typically, your recipient will receive the funds in the currency you specify. However, some countries may convert the funds into local currency (conversion fees may apply).
