It’s almost that time of year again: health insurance exchange season, when people all over the country go online to choose a health insurance policy from an overwhelming number of options.

Whether you’re considering a plan that’s eligible for a health savings account (HSA) or already have an HSA, it’s likely you’re not aware of all the useful and unusual things it can cover.

First things first: What is an HSA? An HSA is similar to a regular savings account, but is tax free as long as all funds are used for medical expenses.

To have one, you must have a qualifying health insurance plan. What Happens to My HSA When I Leave My Job?

Unlike a Flexible Spending Account, you can keep your Health Savings Account (HSA) when you leave your job. Even if you opened your HSA in association with a high deductible health plan (HDHP) you got from your job, the HSA itself is yours to keep. All of the money in it—including contributions your employer made, contributions you made, and interest or investment growth—belongs to you.

Pay COBRA Premiums Using Your Health Savings Account

If you’re losing your health insurance as a result of leaving your job, you can use the money in your HSA to pay the monthly premiums for COBRA continuation of your health insurance. This is considered a qualified medical expense, so you won’t have to pay income taxes on the withdrawals, and you won't be subject to the 20% penalty that applies to HSA withdrawals that aren't used for qualified medical expenses.

What if you can’t afford COBRA, don’t want to continue your current health plan, or aren’t eligible for COBRA? As long as you’re receiving federal or state unemployment benefits, you may withdraw the money in your HSA to pay health insurance premiums. For example, you could purchase a health plan from your state’s Affordable Care Act health insurance exchange and use where can hsa card be used from your HSA to pay the premiums. Use Your HSA as an Emergency Fund

The money in your HSA can be withdrawn to pay for medical expenses. But you don't have to withdraw money from your HSA when you have a medical expense. Instead, you can pay your medical bills with other money (post-tax) and keep the receipt. Then, months or years or decades later, you can withdraw money from your HSA to reimburse yourself for the medical expense that you paid with post-tax money (this is assuming you didn't itemize those medical expenses on your tax where can hsa card be used the year you paid them; you can't ever double-dip on your taxes, so if you itemize the deduction, you can't also reimburse yourself with pre-tax HSA money).

So some people treat their HSA as an emergency fund, invested in stocks or bonds or an interest-bearing account, with the gains growing tax-free from one year to the next. Losing Your High Deductible Health Plan? Stop Your HSA Contributions

If you lose your high deductible health plan (HDHP) health insurance coverage, you won’t be able to contribute to your HSA until you regain HDHP coverage. This is true even if you get health insurance coverage from a different type of health plan. Once you turn 65, you may withdraw money from your HSA for any reason without facing the 20% penalty for non-medical withdrawals. However, only the money you withdraw for qualified medical expenses will be tax-free. You’ll pay regular income taxes on money you withdraw for non-medical purposes.

Medicare premiums (for Part B, Part D, Medicare Advantage, and Part A for people who don't receive it premium-free) are considered a qualified medical expense, but Medicare supplemental policies (Medigap plans) are not. You’ll pay income taxes on HSA withdrawals used for Medigap premiums, but the HSA withdrawals you use for other Medicare premiums will be tax-free.

Note that while you can generally always use your HSA funds to cover medical expenses for your spouse, the rules are a little different for Medicare premiums: You can only use your pre-tax HSA funds to cover your spouse's Medicare premiums if you and your spouse are at least 65 years old. If you're not yet 65, you won't be able to cover your spouse's Medicare premiums with your HSA funds until you turn 65 (HSAs are individually owned, even if the plan is linked to a family HDHP; each spouse can have their own HSA if they're eligible, or they can both contribute to one that's in just one spouse's name).

You may no longer make contributions to your HSA once you’ve enrolled in Medicare. This is true even if you're only enrolling in Medicare Part A, and are delaying Medicare Part B because you're still working and enrolled in your employer's health plan. You'll need to stop your HSA contributions as soon as you're enrolled in any Medicare coverage. Some people choose to delay even premium-free Medicare Part A if they're still working, not yet receiving Social Security benefits, enrolled in their employer's HDHP, and making HSA contributions.

Want to Change HSA Custodians?

Catch-Up Contributions

If you are an HSA accountholder and meet the qualifications below, you are also eligible to make a catch-up contribution of an extra $1,000 to your HSA:

  • Will be 55 years of age or older by the end of the current tax year
  • Not enrolled in Medicare-- if you enroll in Medicare mid-year, you must prorate your contributions, including any catch-up contributions

If your spouse is covered under your medical insurance and they meet these qualifications, they are also able to make a catch-up contribution into a separate HSA in their own name.

Can I Use My HSA For My Spouse?

Yes, you can use your HSA for your spouse. Can I Use My HSA For Dental?

Dental care reimbursement is an eligible expense for your HSA. Other qualifying dental expenses can include dental cleanings, dental services and procedures, dental dams, medical dental implants, dental sealants, dental veneers, dentures, denture adhesive, denture cleaning supplies, denture stain cleaner, and treatment from a denturist.

Dental floss, however, does not qualify.

Pregnancy Tests or Baby Diapers?

Any expenses associated with the process of birth control can be paid for using HSA funds. This includes those prescribed by a doctor (birth control pills, IUD, diaphragm, etc.) as well as over-the-counter products and devices (e.g., condoms, spermicide, and pregnancy test kits). Diapers, on the other hand, do not qualify as a medical expense unless they are for a handicapped individual beyond the age of infancy. Money spent on a diaper service for an adult can also qualify if it’s been prescribed by a physician for a specific medical condition.

CPR Classes or Smoking Cessation Programs?

Some things related to smoking cessation, including prescription drugs and the cost of classes or programs to help you quit, are qualified medical expenses. Things that don’t need a prescription, like nicotine gum or patches, may qualify. Be sure to check your plan details.2

CPR classes are not considered medically necessary, so you shouldn’t charge this to your HSA.

Medical Marijuana or Experimental Drugs?

Experimental drugs, if they are obtained legally, can be purchased using funds from your HSA. Marijuana, on the other hand, is illegal under federal law. Even if it is legal in your state and you are using it to treat a specific medical condition under the supervision of a doctor, it does not qualify as a medical expense for the purposes of your health savings account.

Can I Use My HSA For a Gym Membership?

A gym membership, whether it is to promote your general health or to help with weight loss, does not count as a qualified expense.

Can I Use My HSA For Massage?

Yes, you can use your HSA for a massage. You might be surprised to learn that several different kinds of therapy, including massage therapy, acupuncture, and chiropractors are all qualified expenses, as long as these professionals are providing medical care.

Can I Use My HSA For Glasses?

Glasses are considered a qualifying expense, so yes you can use your HSA funds for these. If you use contact lenses for a medical reason (not just because it’s Halloween, or you want to change your eye color), you can buy related supplies like saline solution or contact cleaner with your HSA card.

Can I Use My HSA For LASIK?

Yes, LASIK (Laser Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis) qualifies for reimbursement with your HSA. In addition to this type of vision correction, laser eye surgery is also eligible.

Can I Use My HSA For Vitamins?

Yes, prenatal vitamins may be eligible for HSA coverage, as well as certain painkillers and allergy and sinus medicine.2 Verify this with your plan and/or carrier, as not all plans are the same.

5 Things You Didn't Know Your HSA Could Do

It’s almost that time of year again: health insurance exchange season, when people all over the country go online to choose a health insurance policy from an overwhelming number of options.

Whether you’re considering a plan that’s eligible for a health savings account (HSA) or already have an HSA, it’s likely you’re not aware of all the useful and unusual things it can cover.

First things first: What is an HSA? An HSA is similar to a regular savings account, but is tax free as long as all funds are used for medical expenses.

To have one, you must have a qualifying health insurance plan. A high deductible health plan (HDHP) — meaning it has an annual deductible of $1,250 for self-coverage or $2,500 for family coverage — is the only type of plan that is eligible for an HSA. A deductible is the amount you have to pay out of pocket before your insurance plan begins to pay.

The benefit of having an HDHP is that monthly premiums are among the lowest available. The flipside is that if you need emergency medical care you could be stuck with a huge bill. Health savings accounts go hand-in-hand with HDHPs, and function as a way to help cover some of those out-of-pocket costs tax-free. Either you or your employer can contribute the funds, pre-tax. The HSA covers tests and copays for doctor visits, but it can be used for a lot more, including the following:

1. Cover Dental and Vision for the Whole Family

If your insurance doesn’t cover vision or dental, you can use HSA funds to pay for these types of care. This includes costly vision and dental charges in addition to artificial teeth, glasses, laser eye surgery, contacts, and saline solution.

And that goes for the whole family. Even if you are the account holder, HSA funds can cover medical costs for your spouse and dependents, including your children up to age 26, even if members of your family are on a different health insurance plan.


2. Pay for Transportation

In the case of an emergency, HSA funds can be used to pay ambulance bills, which can cost as much as some visits to an emergency room. For those with mobility issues, HSA funds can also be used for taxi or shuttle services to and from medical facilities. Unless you have an HSA with a debit card, you’ll probably have to pay these up front and reimburse yourself through withdrawal. In any case, keep documentation of appointments and the transportation bills with receipts to avoid taxes.

3. Make You Money

Any funds in an HSA can be invested, so long as the bank holding it offers that option; in fact, HSAs are on the rise as a way to save for retirement. “Contributions are tax-deductible or pretax, investment growth is tax free, and distributions at any time for eligible expenses are tax free,” says Matt Irvine, vice president of sales and marketing for Health Saving Administrators, which deals exclusively in HSAs. “That is a triple tax advantage. All other retirement accounts provide only a double tax advantage.”

Fidelity Investments, which tracks retiree health care costs, estimates health expenses for the average couple retiring this year to be $220,000. That includes insurance premiums, but HSAs can be used to cover Medicare Parts B and D, and some long-term care premiums as well.

4. Pay for Prescriptions

Depending on your health condition, prescriptions can really take a toll on your bank account. This is especially true for people with autoimmune diseases, for which drugs can cost thousands of dollars per month, and the patient is usually on the hook for those costs until the deductible is met.

In fact, HSA funds can help pay for any and all prescription costs — for example, contraceptives not covered by an exempt employer, or other drugs not covered by your health plan.

5. Cover Nonmedical Therapeutic Charges

An HSA can also be used for more holistic care approaches. Therapeutic care, such as psychological counseling, is eligible for tax-free HSA funds, as is addiction treatment, acupuncture, and chiropractic fees. HSA money can also be used to pay for assistive devices such as hearing aids, car adaptations for the disabled, and even to purchase a guide dog.

At this point, you may be wondering if there’s anything an HSA won’t cover. Well, yes.

“Examples of those items would be elective cosmetic surgery, funeral services, gym memberships, over the counter medications — unless prescribed — dance lessons, teeth whitening, and standard health insurance premiums,” says Irvine.

Even with those restrictions, HSAs can really be a lifeline for medical costs, and are worth considering if you’re going to be looking for a new insurance plan this fall.

You can now use your FSA or HSA card on Amazon

Health savings accounts (HSAs) and flexible spending accounts (FSAs) are a great way to use pre-tax dollars to purchase eligible healthcare services and supplies. For example, HSA funds may be used to pay for doctor appointments, prescription medications, imaging, medical equipment, medical supplies and more.

Now, as an added convenience, you can use your FSA or HSA card on Amazon, just like you would at any  other retailer who accepts those cards. Amazon provides  a list of eligible items as well as an FSA & HSA Shop, making it easy to know up front if your item is eligible.
