We are only one week away from the biggest nonprofit fundraiser in North Texas. Next Thursday, September 23rd, marks Communities Foundation of Texas’ 13th North Texas Giving Day. Technically, it launched Wednesday, September 1, with early giving and 22 days of donations, events, and volunteering that culminate with North Texas Giving Day on September 23. In the thirteenth installment, a record-breaking 3,350 nonprofits stand to benefit from the community fundraiser.

In 2020, $58.8 million was raised through 106,000 donors (the maximum capacity of the Dallas Cowboys’ stadium with standing room is 105,000.) benefiting over 3,200 local nonprofits, bringing the twelve-year total to over $375 million for the community. NTX Giving Day is the largest community-wide giving event in the nation. Since its inception in 2009, the online event has transformed from an idea to help local people give wisely, to a movement that has ignited a broad culture of community-wide giving. During NTX Giving Day, everyone can be a philanthropist to build a stronger and more vibrant community.

There will also be a few sponsored events before the big day, on September 18th, SCHEELS Celebrates NTX Giving Day at Grandscape, which sees 40 participating North Texas Giving Day nonprofits, highlight performances in The Colony. On the 22nd, the city of Dallas will issue a proclamation with a group of Dallas nonprofits. Additionally, CFT, NTX Giving Day, and Deep Vellum Books presented a livestream “The Accommodation: The Politics of Race in an American City” on September 14th, in partnership with KERA that can be viewed here.

This year, for the first time, NTX Giving Day has an official presenting sponsor in Amazon. “Having Amazon as our 2021 presenting sponsor is a dream match for Communities Foundation of Texas. This partnership will empower Giving Day to significantly expand its reach to new audiences and elevate the nonprofit sector in unique and exciting ways,” said Monica Egert Smith, CFT’s Chief Relationship Officer.

It is a sentiment that Vickie Yakunin, Amazon’s Dallas Senior Manager of External Affairs echoed, “Amazon is thrilled to serve as North Texas Giving Day’s presenting sponsor. The donations from this event fuel so much important work throughout North Texas, strengthening our community and supporting the most vulnerable.” Yakunin continues, “Thousands of our employees work and live across North Texas. We strive not just to be a good employer, but also a good neighbor. By partnering with North Texas Giving Day, an event that is about giving back locally, we are able to invest in our community as we work together to recover from the pandemic and build a more equitable future for all.”

For the big day, there is a whole suite of events and opportunities including a Senior Source’s 60th Birthday Bash, a socially distanced 60th birthday party with foster grandparent and senior companion volunteers, board, and donors; activity tables including assembling essential needs “party favors” for local nursing home residents, note-writing, and wish-making for isolated older adults; birthday cake, ice cream, prizes, games and more. Senior Source’s 60th Birthday Bash begins at 1:00 p.m., at 3910 Harry Hines Dallas, 75219. Next, the North Texas Giving Day Young Professionals Happy Hour takes place from 6:30 p.m.–9:30 p.m. at Communities Foundation of Texas, 5500 Caruth Haven Ln, Dallas, TX 75225. Running concurrently with the Happy Hour, the North Texas Giving Day Concert Presented by the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation and Levitt Pavilion will take place in Arlington. The concert will feature the $10,000 People’s Choice Award announcement, six $5,000 award announcements to Arlington-based organizations, hundreds of attendees enjoying food trucks and live entertainment from 10-time Grammy Award winners, Take Six, and Texas country-western.

Heard Event

Help Us Restore the Boardwalk This North Texas Giving Day

We are continuing to work on repairing one of our most popular trails, the boardwalk through the wetlands, in order to make it even more accessible to a broader population of visitors and further our mission to bring nature and people together. With your help this North Texas Giving Day, we will be able to both preserve our ecological resources and educate the future generations of visitors about them.

When you give via www.NorthTexasGivingDay.org, your donation goes further with bonus funds and prizes. Our goal for this North Texas Giving Day project is to repair 500 feet. With your help, we can accomplish this! Please consider contributing today. As little as $30 will help 2 feet of this trail.

Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary is a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to bringing nature and people together to discover, enjoy, experience, restore and preserve our priceless environment. Your support through financial contributions will help ensure that the Heard, including a 289-acre nature preserve, will be sustained.

Thank you for your consideration of this project and your support!

More About Us

Founded in 1967, the Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary in McKinney Texas consists of a natural science museum, indoor and outdoor exhibits, over six miles of nature trails, an outdoor amphitheater and a 289 acre wildlife sanctuary. The Heard hosts more than 100,000 visitors each year, drawing families, educators, researchers, environmentalists, and more. Visitors hike the trails year round (self-guided or interpreted by Heard volunteers and staff, by reservation) and have the opportunity encounter many species of flora and fauna. Programs offered by the Heard include exhibits, school field trips, outreach programs, homeschool natural science programs, preschool natural science programs, summer nature camps, birthday parties, scouting initiatives, environmental research programs, team-building initiatives, night hikes and community events.

Protected for its biological importance and for scientific and educational use, this nature preserve is part of the less than 1% of the Blackland Prairie (the most endangered ecosystem in North America) that remains. The Heard Wildlife Sanctuary is a nature preserve rather than a park because of the special character of this area and the rarity of some of its plants and animals. Preserving these natural resources depends on our collective stewardship. Because the Heard does not receive regular tax funding, improvements to our facility and conservation of these resources are made possible with the support of individuals like you through donations, admissions and volunteering.

The Heard was founded in 1967 by Bessie Heard at the age of 80. In a time when the rate of expansion of the Metroplex was slower than today, she foresaw the need to preserve a place where future generations could experience nature. The Heard’s mission of bringing nature and people together is largely fulfilled through onsite educational programs, which emphasizes an appreciation of nature and its conservation and utilizes the natural resources available within our 289-acre nature preserve.

The Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary located in McKinney, TX also manages roughly 60 combined acres of Blackland Prairie restoration sites. The Blackland Prairie ecoregion once covered over 19,000 square miles in Texas, which began at the Red River, north of Dallas, and extended south to present-day San Antonio. Now, less than 1% of this ecologically critical ecosystem remains.

Coming Together as a Community

North Texas Giving Tuesday Now was the first-ever giving day collaboration between United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, Communities Foundation of Texas, and Dallas Cowboys.

GivingTuesdayNow gave all three organizations the opportunity to team together to make the biggest impact as possible for their community of North Texas. Working together they raised more than $20.7 million for over 2,500 North Texas nonprofits, as well as an additional $21.8 million contributed to COVID-19 relief funds.

COVID-19 prevented people from gathering in person, but North Texas still found a way to come together. Organizers and nonprofits hosted virtual music concerts, art performances, and volunteer opportunities taking place during the global #GivingTuesdayNow event.

Fostering Collaboration During COVID

North Texas Giving Tuesday Now was created as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic and GivingTuesday’s call to action. North Texas Giving Day’s flagship fall event takes months of preparation, but their team was still able to pull this event off with only a few weeks time to prepare.

Luckily, the Communities Foundation of Texas did not have to do it alone; they rallied together with United Way of Metropolitan Dallas and Dallas Cowboys to address the challenging times facing the North Texas community.

The success of North Texas Giving Tuesday Now underscores the importance of coming together as a community to give and support others.

The Community Giving Event Solution

North Texas Giving Day’s flagship fall event, hosted on Neon One, usually has loads of training, in-person events, and balloons. It has been described in the past as, a party with a purpose. But much of that had to change without the time or availability to meet in person.

In a short time, North Texas Giving Day’s website was modified to represent all three partners equally. They also set new criteria for early giving and nonprofit participation and quickly created virtual fundraising training for participating nonprofits. This collaboration resulted in:

  • A successful 18-hour giving event
  • 45,000 total individual donors
  • 9,400 donors pledged ~300,000 volunteer hours

#GivingTuesdayNow Takeaways

Woman in mask preparing food
  1. Impact should be measure by more than dollars raised — consider the number of nonprofits that participated, the amount of new donors and volunteers, and net new pledged volunteer hours.
  2. Giving Events are about community. Include your community partners in your giving event because there is power around teaming up and doing things together.
  3. Don’t be afraid of change. #GivingTuesdayNow taught everyone that being nimble and allowing change to happen can yield great results.

Discover your Community Giving Event potential. When you have an easy-to-use software ecosystem, the sky’s the limit for your mission-focused organization. Let’s get there together.

Founded in 1967, the Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary in McKinney Texas consists of a natural science museum, indoor and outdoor exhibits, over six miles of nature trails, an outdoor amphitheater how to sign up for north texas giving day a 289 acre wildlife sanctuary. The Heard hosts more than 100,000 visitors each year, drawing families, educators, researchers, environmentalists, and more.
