Eastern Bank’s storied history in Lynn dates back to 1826, when a group of 28 prominent men opened the Lynn Institution for Savings.

 The bank started with 14 depositors and a total of  $325. There were no employees; rather, trustees were responsible for tending to the needs of customers during business hours – make that hour, as the bank was open only on Wednesdays from 2-3 p.m.

The Lynn Institution for Savings was the sixth savings bank to be established in Massachusetts. The second had been the Institution for Savings in Salem, in 1818, which later became Salem Savings Bank. The two neighboring institutions operated independently for 155 years, until First East Bank, which the Lynn Institution for Savings had become in 1976, merged with Salem Savings Bank in 1981 to form Eastern Savings Bank. The company was reorganized and named Eastern Bank Corporation in 1989.
In 1992, Eastern Bank acquired the deposits of Shore Bank & Trust of Lynn. A year later, it merged with First Colonial Bank – formerly Lynn Five Cents Savings Bank – to create one of the largest independent full-service banks in the country.

Eastern’s growth has continued over the last 15 years. It now has 85 branches and 24 insurance offices serving 400,000 customers from Newburyport to Cape Cod. The bank, which remains a mutual bank, is one of the five largest independent banks in New England.

If you are a small business owner beware of this bank and location. The branch manager here is part of a business network group and will hound you with trying to get you to use her "people". The people who work at this bank are miserable here and when you see them out of the bank they act like they do not know you. In addition if you move your to another bank the customer service stops. Branch manager was so eager and on time signing me up. When in came to tax season asked the branch manager for access to the account for the bookkeeper. Left me hanging for weeks causing me to filing my taxes late. I went to another bank and asked 6 people to stop debits and credits on my account. Until I get all my accounts situated with new account. Because I did not use the word "freeze" it was never done. It caused me to get over $400 in ISF fees. Even after call after call they still wack me with fees. Then talking to the headquarters they are just as incompetent as the local bank. I guess it is real when they say starts with the top down. This "bank" cares about the 1% and gives two (&^% about small businesses and the middle class. This might be the oldest bank in Mass but also has the worst service and oldest technology. Wonder how much the Executives went home with last year because they royally screwed me had another business account they closed that and used the money to pay the overage on my other business account. Stay far away from this bank!

I've never experienced such horrible banking in my life.There was a security breach with my account, I was told come into the branch and file fraud paper work etc. which I did.I never heard another word from the bank, I was called by customer service numerous numerous times over my account now being over drawn "which again was Not my wrong doing". Come to find out after numerous calls i made to this bank,I was told that a letter supposedly was mailed out to me and they needed more proof from me that I did NOT authorize this transaction and now I needed to go BACK into the branch to refile fraud paper work. Which I did, all for it NOT to be filed and For them to now charge off my account. So now I am "trying" to contact the charge off department (who does not return calls) so I can prove my case yet again. This has been going on for months now and I still have not got this cleared up. Now I have to get a lawyer involved so I don't have a negative mark against me. I've never in my life experienced more unprofessional,Negligent and irresponsible people in one company as I have with this bank.STAY CLEAR OF THIS BANK!

I have been going to this particular bank through 3 of its moves. There are at least 2 tellers that have been there about as long as I have been going, 26 years. I wouldn't think of going anywhere else for my main banking needs.
The only complaint I have is that its so hot in there! I stick to the drive thru.

LYNN (CBS) – Eastern Bank’s headquarters in Lynn was evacuated Monday morning after a fire and explosions rattled the building and staff.

Fire Chief James McDonald said a National Grid crew was replacing an old transformer with a new one in an electrical room when something went wrong.

“They were disconnecting old equipment that still had energy to it,” said McDonald.

Bank employees said the fire alarm went off and as the building was evacuated, they saw smoke and heard explosions.

“It sounded like someone was setting off fireworks,” said employee Heather Mateo. “Everyone went running, it was kind of a scary scene.”

No one was seriously hurt.  Police said one woman fell on a curb as she was leaving the bank.

Everyone inside was moved across the street to North Shore Community College.

About 500 people work in the building, which has been closed for the day. McDonald said there were at least 200 inside during the incident.

On it’s Facebook page, Eastern Bank said customers may notice some technical difficulties.

“Due to an electrical mishap at our Operations Center there may be sporadic outages to our phone and email services.”

The building houses the eastern bank lynn ma hours headquarters and customer call center. Those phone lines are expected to be back up and running by Tuesday morning.
