Belfast Health and Social Care Trust Case Study

The largest integrated health and social care trust in the UK implements Excelpoint

The Customer

The Belfast Health and Social Care Trust (BHSCT) delivers integrated health and social care to approximately 340,000 citizens in Belfast. With a workforce of over 22,000, it provides the majority of regional specialist services to all of Northern Ireland.

The Challenge

Belfast Trust is committed to improving employee health and well-being. With this in mind, it created the b well initiative.

The initiative provides employees with support and information on a broad range of health and wellbeing issues. As part of the initiative, it required a solution to enable it to distribute expert advice and promote healthcare campaigns to employees.

It required a passive method of communication, publishing content and updates to employees from experts within the Trust. As many the Trust’s employees do not have access to a PC during their working day, it required a solution accessible from a mobile device.

The Outcomes

Excelpoint developed the b well mobile app using its no-code software technology quickly and easily. Once the team in the Trust provided content, the implementation only took a matter of weeks.

The internal application is targeted at Trust employees. It is downloadable on iOS, Android and Windows devices. The app provides employees with access to information that is structured and categorised into formats to support the initiatives of the Trust. The categories include physical, mental and dietary content.

In support of specific campaigns, the app receives regular push notifications, again to encourage the employee to consider daily practices in the context of their overall wellbeing.

Information and push notifications within the application are updated and edited through Excelpoint’s no-code software so that the Trust can coordinate and provide the most up to date health and welfare news to its employees.

Excelpoint provided the Trust with a tool to promote employee health and well-being through a simple multi-channel content management application.

Following the initial success of the initiative, the Trust moved to the next phase to include interactive feedback from the app users, to engage employees more intuitively in the process.

The b well app and website proved to be so successful that Belfast Health and Social Care Trust was shortlisted for the Wellbeing at Work Award at the 2017 Responsible Business Awards in Northern Ireland.

B Well initiative performance statistics

  •  49,469 website views, equating to 9,814 online usersB Well App - Belfast Health and Social Care Trust
  • Over 1,000 downloads of the b well mobile app
  • Belfast Trust employee engagement score is 3.72
  • The Trust absence rates reduced by 5.4%
  • 60% of staff would recommend the Trust as a great place to work

The Testimonial

“Working with Excelpoint helped us to deliver this tool at a fraction of the cost and in a fraction of the time compared to any other means of developing an app from the ground up.”

The Rudnick Estates Trust was created in 1965 by the beneficiaries of 11 different trusts for the purpose of liquidating the trusts’ assets and distributing the proceeds to the beneficiaries. While the trustee could negotiate a sale, any disposition had to be approved by a majority of the beneficiaries to be effective.

In 1999, the trust’s major asset, a 68,000-acre ranch, remained. The trustee began the process of selling the ranch by obtaining various offers. The trustee presented an offer for $48 million to the beneficiaries for approval.

The appellants, as beneficiaries, filed for the ex parte appointment of a temporary trustee, an injunction against the sale of the ranch, and the removal of the trustee. Meanwhile, all of the beneficiaries met and a majority voted to accept the offer, over the objection of the appellants. The appellants withdrew their filing after the vote.

The trustee filed a petition to obtain instructions for consummating the sale of the ranch and for approval of the distribution of proceeds. The sale agreement provided that it would terminate if not approved by the court by May 4, 2008. The probate court set a hearing for April 3, 2008.

Appellants filed an ex parte application to vacate the April 3 hearing date and objections to the trustee’s petition. The hearing started on April 21 and lasted eight days. On May 2, the probate court approved the sale and instructed the trustee to proceed.

The trustee then filed a motion to recover attorneys’ fees and costs incurred with the petition for instructions and to charge that amount against the appellants’ shares of the trust. The court found that the appellants’ opposition to the trustee’s petition was not made in good faith and granted the motion.

Appellants argued that the probate court could not award fees absent statutory or contractual authority, but the appellate court ruled that the award was made under the equitable powers that the probate court holds over the administration of trusts in its jurisdiction. The court concluded that it would be unfair for the majority of the beneficiaries to be charged the fees and costs because of appellants’ unfounded opposition and attempts to delay the sale.

The court confirmed that a trustee may hire attorneys to aid the trust, and may pay reasonable fees out of the trust assets. The issue here was whether it was appropriate to shift the burden of paying those fees entirely to the appellants’ shares, and the court determined that it was, based on appellants’ bad faith.

May 3, 2021) “Fortnite” maker Epic Games and Apple kicked off their three-week trial Monday in a courtroom battle that could have far reaching implications for the iPhone maker’s business model and U.S. antitrust law.

In opening statements in a federal courthouse in Oakland, Calif., Epic painted Apple as a monopolist that concocted a plan to lure software developers and customers into iOS, its mobile operating system, and then lock them in with onerous and restrictive rules.

Apple painted Epic as an opportunist looking to cut costs with a court case that could destroy iOS and endanger consumers by forcing allowing harmful and malicious apps onto their phones ...

... “At some level, this is a run of the mill antitrust case, in the sense that the issues are fairly standard,” said Shubha Ghosh, a law professor at Syracuse University who focuses on antitrust issues. “Though the facts are unique, and the potential outcome could be very interesting for tech companies like Apple" ...

"The current climate is certainly one where antitrust is on the rise and there is a concern with bigness as well as issues of price and distribution," said Shubha Ghosh, director of Syracuse University's Intellectual Property Law Institute. "Even though this just involves video games, it could have implications for other platform-based markets and companies like Amazon."

Rajasthan-based organisation files anti-trust case against Apple over in-app payment issues: Report

FP TrendingSep 03, 2021 18:58:24 IST

The sailing isn’t quite smooth for Apple Inc right now, as it is facing an anti-trust challenge in India. Reuters reports the company has been taking undue advantage of its dominant position in the app market by forcing developers to use its proprietary in-app purchase system.

Together We Fight Society, a Rajasthan-based not-for-profit organisation, has filed the case claiming the company’s fee of up to 30 percent raises the costs for app developers and users, while also blocking new app developers from entering the market. The case alleges how forcing developers to only use in-app payment solutions are anti-competitive, destabilising the country's payment processors, who offer their services at significantly lower charges, in the range of just one to five percent.

"The existence of the 30 percent commission means that some app developers will never make it to the market. This could also result in consumer harm," reads the filing.

Back in 2020, Apple faced similar allegations in the European Union, where regulators investigated the company's policy update of imposing an in-app fee of 30 percent for the distribution of paid digital content, along with other restrictions.

The Indian filing will be reviewed by the Competition Commission of India (CCI). The statutory body may order its investigations arm to conduct a deeper probe into the case.

Last week, South Korea approved a bill banning Google and Apple from forcing software developers to use their payment systems and “inappropriately” delaying app reviews.

Recently, Apple has relaxed some of the restrictions for developers across the world. It has now allowed them to use email and alike, to include some payment alternatives outside of their iOS app.

Although the US firm retained a ban on allowing other forms of payment options inside apps, it may allow some of the apps to provide customers an in-app link to bypass Apple's purchase system.

University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust Case Study

Pre-operative anxiety affects 50-75% of children and is associated with worse physical and mental outcomes for the patient. Fifty percent of children developnegative post-hospital behavioural changes, such as separation anxiety and bed-wetting; 8% of these changes are on-going at one year post-procedure. Additionally, there are financial implications for the hospital and wider society, for example due to cancelled operations or ongoing medical costs due to treatment non-adherence. Research demonstrates that psychological preparation before healthcare intervention improves outcomes. Currently, this is predominantly provided via paper leaflets anda single face to face meeting pre-admission; it is thus limited by cost and time. Coronavirus has further restricted the accessibility of these meetings.

Little Journey is a digital health company that psychologically prepares and supports children and their families undergoing a healthcare procedure. The aim is to modify patient behaviours and decrease patient anxietyto improve health outcomes. Little Journey can be downloaded as a free smartphone app by patients and their families; it provides immersive and interactive content that can be tailored to the end user. Support can therefore be accessed anytime, anywhere. The app includes familiarisation of the healthcare setting and staff, coping skills education and parent information articles. The content can be adjusted according to age and is timetabled to be delivered at certain timelines on the patient’s journey. Alongside the app is a web-based hospital portal. This gives real-time control to the healthcare professionals to control the application and modify the patient pathway, to monitor key performance indicators and to review patient feedback.

Patients using Little Journey at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS trust reported favourably on the app. Alex, aged 10 said, “I really like it. It’s good to know what it will look like when I come in and I’m less worried now”. Izzy, aged 11 said, “I really loved the app and it’s really good, literally, seriously, and I think that all the other children will like it too”.

Parents of a younger patient, Freddie (aged 5) spoke of how the app empowered them to be able to explain the procedure to him:“We think the trustcase app is a really good idea. We hadn’t really discussed the operation with Freddie yet as we weren’t quite sure what to say or how best to go about it, so the app really helps with that”. Regarding preparation for the day: “The app helped as he was very relaxed. It helped seeing where he would sleep. We could have a look before the day and we felt ready. It helped reduce the stress of coming to hospital as we were unsure how to prepare our son for what was going to happen and it helped encourage him to talk about it.Freddie particularly liked the games including the bit where you can dress up the doctors and nurses in various costumes. He trustcase app a bit disappointed though when his surgeon on the day wasn’t a rhino wearing a pink tutu!”

Dr Joseph Hardwicke, a Clinical Innovation Lead at UHCW NHS Trust, described how the app can be easily implemented within the trust. He said,“The Little Journey App has provided an easily adoptable solution to enhance the patient experience for children and their parents when they are visiting hospital for a planned procedure. It aligns well with our Trust’s mission here at the University Hospitals of Coventry and Warwickshire to Care, Achieve and Innovate.”

Mr Christopher Hill, Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeonat UHCW NHS trust spoke about the benefits of the virtual reality tour of the unit. He said, “Coming to hospital for surgery can be a worrying time for anyone, but especially for a child.  The Little Journey app is fantastic as it allows a child and their family to go on a virtual walkthrough of the hospital areas they trustcase app visit, so they know what to expect ahead of time.  This helps allay many of their 88 sears customer service number and keeps them more relaxed on the day of surgery.  It gives parents a way of talking through aspects of the surgery/admission with their child, which can otherwise be a challenging topic to broach, and utilises trustcase app games and characters which children respond positively to.  It is a great, innovative app that is significantly improving the patient (and parent) experience here at the University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire.”

Little Journey plans to expand into new areas of healthcare and clinical research. It is easily scalable and aims to become a world leading healthcare information tool for clinical and research trial procedures, in the process, improving the mental and physical health outcomes of children following any healthcare intervention whether as part of routine care or a clinical trial.

Moving forward, Little Journey aims to better understand children’s and their parent’s information preferences and underlying health behaviours. By combining this understanding with in-app behaviours data and patient reported outcomes, Little Journey can better learn how to identify and modify specific behavioural traits to improve health outcomes. In this way it can enable rapid improvements to patient pathways and facilitate further tailoring of support to children and their families.

WTCCC1

The Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium (WTCCC) is a group of 50 research groups across the UK which was established in 2005. The WTCCC aims were to exploit progress in understanding of patterns of human genome sequence variation along with advances in high-throughput genotyping technologies, and to explore the utility, design and analyses of genome-wide association (GWA) studies. The WTCCC has substantially victoria secret pink velcro slides the number of genes known to play a role in the development of some of our most common diseases and has to date identified approximately 90 new variants across all of the diseases analysed. As well as confirming many of the known associations, some 28 in total, the WTCCC has also identified many novel variants that affect susceptibility to disease.

The WTCCC aims to complete the initial survey of common variation for association to disease, and to examine the replicated association signals detected through resequencing and fine-mapping. The WTCCC will also carry out a major experiment to address the genome-wide measurement of copy number variation (CNV) within the 19,000 samples tested in phase one (16,000 disease samples and 3,000 common controls) and additional samples from breast cancer. In recognition of the success of the WTCCC and to capitalise on the success of the GWA approach, a further round of GWA studies were funded in April 2008. These include 15 WTCCC-collaborative studies and 12 independent studies be supported totalling approximately 120,000 samples. Many of the studies represent major international collaborative networks that have together assembled large sample collections.

WTCCC2 will perform genome-wide association studies in 13 disease conditions: Ankylosing spondylitis, Barrett's oesophagus and oesophageal adenocarcinoma, glaucoma, ischaemic stroke, multiple trustcase app, pre-eclampsia, Parkinson's disease, psychosis endophenotypes, psoriasis, schizophrenia, ulcerative colitis and visceral leishmaniasis. WTCCC2 will also investigate the genetics of reading and mathematics abilities in children and the pharmacogenomics of statin response. Over 60,000 samples will be analysed using either the Affymetrix v6.0 chip or the Illumina 660K trustcase app. The WTCCC2 will also genotype 3,000 controls each from the 1958 British Birth cohort and the UK Blood Bank of america wire transfer routing number california control group, and the 6,000 controls will be genotyped on both the Affymetrix v6.0 and Illumina 1.2M chips.

WTCCC3

To build further on the success of the GWAS approach demonstrated by the WTCCC, the Wellcome Trust has provided support for a further round of GWA studies in January 2009. These include 5 WTCCC-collaborative studies to be carried out in WTCCC3 and 5 independent studies, across a range of diseases. Many of the studies represent major international collaborative networks that have together assembled large sample collections.

WTCCC3 will perform genome-wide association studies in the following 4 disease https www t online de login primary biliary cirrhosis, anorexia nervosa, pre-eclampsia in UK subjects, and the interactions between donor and recipient DNA related to early and late renal transplant dysfunction. The WTCCC3 will also carry out a pilot in a study of the genetics of host control of HIV-1 infection. Over 40,000 samples will be analysed using the Illumina 660K chip. The WTCCC3 will utilise the 6,000 control genotypes generated by the WTCCC2.

Data release

Genotype data from WTCCC1 is available by application to the Consortium Data Access Committee ([email protected]). To support the studies within WTCCC and also the independent studies, the WTCCC will first genotype 6,000 common controls; 3,000 from the 1958 British Birth Cohort and 3,000 from the UK Blood Service Collection, and the data will be made available immediately through the existing controlled data access mechanism of the WTCCC. Data generated from the disease samples in WTCCC2 will be made available six months after data generation and QC, or upon publication.

The issue here was whether it was appropriate to shift the burden of paying those fees entirely to the nasba cpa results shares, and the court determined that it was, based on appellants’ bad faith.

Apple vs Epic Games: All about the anti-trust case

Tech giant Apple and Epic Games, a company known for designing battle royale game Fortnite, have locked horns over an anti-trust case for months. The legal dispute revolved around Apple charging a substantial commission on digital transactions made on apps on the app store.

A federal judge, on Friday, ruled on the case and directed Apple to decommission a part of the competitive barricade that protected its app store.

According to US media reports, the recent ruling is likely to give app developers significant financial room while deciding the selling price of a product on Apple's App Store and could drive the charges down.

Subscription-based platforms like Netflix and Spotify are likely to be a part of such transactions that attract commissions, which can be as high as 30%.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeny, in a tweet on Friday, said that the recent ruling is not a win for developers or consumers. He said Fortnite will return to Apple's app store once it can offer competitive in-app payments. “We will fight on,” he added in a subsequent tweet.

Since that trial ended three months ago, Apple has taken two steps to loosen some of its app store rules — one to settle a lawsuit and another to appease Japanese regulators without altering its commissions. Those concessions make it easier for many apps to prod their users to pay for digital transactions in ways that avoid triggering Apple’s fees, according to reports from Associated Press.

According to Yvonne Gonzalez Trustcase app, the United States District Court Judge, from California's Northern District, Apple had violated the states Unfair Competition Law by forcing Fortnite and its maker Epic Games to use Apple's payment systems on the App Store, where the iPhone maker extracts a 30% commission on every in-app purchase in the process, according to Associated Press inputs.
