## Learn Oven Temperature Conversions

When cooking, oven temperature can make or break your desired meal. If you make it too hot, your entree could burn. A low temperature could cause a meal to take an extended time to cook and dry out any good piece of meat, fish, or poultry. For this reason, you should know how to convert degrees in Fahrenheit to Celsius, as well as the reverse.

### Describing Temperatures

When describing oven temperatures, you'll hear words like "hot," "cool," "slow," and "fast." Here's what all of that means:

- A cool oven temperature would be 90 C (200 F), while a slow oven is considered 150 to 160 C (300–325 F).
- A moderate oven temperature is often a range of 180 to 190 C (350–375 F), and a hot temperature is above 200–230 C (400–450 F).
- A fast oven would have a range of 230–260 C (450–500 F).

### Convert Fahrenheit to Celsius

To convert degrees from Fahrenheit to Celsius, subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature, multiply by 5, then divide by 9. So if the temperature is 350 F, you would subtract 32 to get 318, then multiply by 5 for 1,590 which divided by 9 equals 176.66. That is then rounded up to 180 C.

### Convert Celsius to Fahrenheit

To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, you will need to multiply Celsius degrees by 9, divide by 5, then add 32. If the recipe says 200 C, multiply by 9 to get 1,800, then divide by 5 for 360, and then add 32 for a result of 392. Round that up to 400 F.

## Oven Temperature Conversions

Most modern recipe books and internet sites that provide recipes will give you cooking temperatures based on Gas Mark, Celsius °C (Centigrade) and Fahrenheit °F, however some don't. For instance many US sites will omit the Celsius temperature. This is where you need a handy oven temperature conversion guide like the one below. You may also find it useful for those family recipes that have been hand written and handed down from your parents or grandparents generations, as most people only write down the oven setting for the oven they have at the time.

Notes

- Gas Marks are used in the UK, Ireland and some Commonwealth countries.
- The Gas Mark scale is always in 25 °F breaks. Fahrenheit was the standard measure of temperature in the UK until metrication in the late 1960's/early 1970's.
- Celsius temperatures are given to the nearest 5 degrees.

### Fan Ovens (a.k.a. Convection Ovens)

The fan oven (known as a Convection Oven in the US) uses a fan to assist with the flow of air around the oven and therefore provides more even heat distribution throughout the oven. This has the effect of cooking dishes faster and more evenly, thus when using a recipe, with a standard temperature, lower temperatures should be used if you have a fan oven. As a general rule set the fan oven 20 °C (approx 70 °F) lower than a conventional oven.

The fan oven is often referred to as a convection oven although convection is a term for the natural distribution of heat in air due to the hot air rising and forcing the cold air downwards. This is essentially what happens in a conventional oven to heat the entire oven.

### French Gas Oven Temperatures

French recipes may well give oven temperatures as Th1, Th2, Th3 ... Th9. The Th stands for Thermostat, thus Thermostat 1 is the French equivalent of Gas Mark 1. You need to be careful as the oven temperatures for the French Th1, Th2 are not the same as those for the UK & Irelands Gas Mark 1, 2 etc. The temperatures for each of the Thermostat values are given in the table below, with conversion to Fahrenheit for those in the US.

Thermostat | °C Celsius | °F Fahrenheit |

Th1 | 30 °C | 85 °F |

Th2 | 60 °C | 140 °F |

Th3 | 90 °C | 195 °F |

Th4 | 120 °C | 250 °F |

Th5 | 150 °C | 300 °F |

Th6 | 180 °C | 355 °F |

Th7 | 210 °C | 410 °F |

Th8 | 240 °C | 465 °F |

Th9 | 270 °C | 520 °F |

### German Gas Oven Temperatures

German recipes may indicate oven settings of Stufe 1, Stufe 2 ... Stufe 8. These are the gas mark settings for German gas ovens, with Stufe translating as stage or increment in English. Temperatures for the German Gasherd Stufe are given in the following table:

Stufe | °C Celsius | °F Fahrenheit |

Stufe 1 | 150 °C | 300 °F |

Stufe 2 | 160 °C | 320 °F |

Stufe 3 | 180 °C | 355 °F |

Stufe 4 | 200 °C | 390 °F |

Stufe 5 | 220 °C | 430 °F |

Stufe 6 | 240 °C | 465 °F |

Stufe 7 | 260 °C | 500 °F |

Stufe 8 | 280 °C | 535 °F |

## Celsius to Fahrenheit Conversion

I moved to England and the imperial measurement units and different temperature scales are a huge problem in everyday life. Temperatures for baking or cooking are mostly stated as Fahrenheit, but the temperature on the oven is stated as Celsius.

The conversion is not straightforward because both temperature scales use different fixed points and scale widths. Therefore a Celsius Fahrenheit Converter is a useful tool.

How to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit without the use of a calculator? There are some mnemonics and rules of thumb to give an approximate estimate about temperature conversion. Those who want to convert baking temperatures are lucky. The temperature can be easily doubled or divided by half. The following Celsius To Fahrenheit Conversion Table shows the temperature between 200 and 500 degrees Fahrenheit and their approximated degrees Celsius equivalent, as well as the error of the approximate conversion.

T_{F} [°F] | T_{C,estimated}[°C] | T_{C,calculated} [°C] | Error [°C] |
---|---|---|---|

200 | 100 | 93 | 7 |

220 | 110 | 104 | 6 |

240 | 120 | 116 | 4 |

If you consider that baking temperatures are mostly between 150°C and 220°C, then the maximum error would only be 7 degrees centigrade. A more accurate conversion is not always necessary. For example 350 Fahrenheit equals 176.67 Celsius. If you would use the rule of thumb the error would be 1.67 degrees centigrade. This error is negligible in most circumstances.

Be aware that this rule of thumb only works with baking temperatures and does not work with lower temperatures like the ones seen on the weather forecast. Should the weather forecast predict a sunny day of 32 degrees Fahrenheit, and you expect 16 degree Celsius using this rule of thumb; then you will most certainly be freezing. This is because 32 degree Fahrenheit equals 0 degrees Celsius. However, don't be afraid as this example shows you another mnemonic. As I said, 0 degree Celsius equals 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Furthermore, 16 and 61 is a good number for the conversion of Fahrenheit to Celsius. Because 16 degree Celsius equals approximately 61 degrees Fahrenheit.

Therefore, to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit it is not always necessary to use difficult mathematics. But, if you need an accurate conversion then you can use the Celsius Fahrenheit Converter above. Just fill in your values in one of the boxes and click outside of the boxes to convert.

In addition, you can find the Fahrenheit Celsius Conversion Equations and historical information on the development of the Fahrenheit scale and Celsius scale.

### How to convert oven temperatures

Want to work out how to convert oven temperatures accurately?

Here's how...

### How to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius

You can use a formula to convert degrees Fahrenheit to degrees Celsius.

**The basic Fahrenheit to Celsius formula is (X°F − 32) × 5/9 = Y°C**

So, to work out the temperature to cook in Celsius if you have a recipe in Fahrenheit, subtract 32 from the °F temperature, multiply it by 5, then divide by 9.

For 400°F it would be:

400°F - 32 = 368

368 x 5 = 1840

1840 / 9 = 204.44, which is generally rounded to 200°C

### How to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit

You can use a formula to convert degrees Celsius to degrees Fahrenheit.

**The basic Celsius to degrees Fahrenheit formula is (Y°C × 9/5) + 32 = X°F**

So, to work out the temperature to cook in Fahrenheit if you have a recipe in Celsius, multiply the °C temperature by 9, divide it by 5, then add 32.

For 200°C it would be:

200°C x 9 = 1800

1800 / 5 = 360

360 + 32 = 392, which is generally rounded to 400°F

As a rule of thumb Celsius is **roughly** half the Fahrenheit temperature.

Fan assisted ovens are usually set approximately 25 degrees Celsius (i.e. approximately 50 degrees Fahrenheit) lower than others and cooking time is reduced by 10 minutes for every hour of cooking time.

Different manufacturers and oven types do vary, so always refer to your cooker instruction book.

French recipes may well give oven temperatures as Th1, Th2, Th3 .

German recipes may indicate oven settings of Stufe 1, Stufe 2 .

## Celsius to Fahrenheit Conversion

I moved to England and the imperial measurement units and different temperature scales are a huge problem in everyday life. Temperatures for baking or cooking are mostly stated as Fahrenheit, but the temperature on the oven is stated as Celsius.

The conversion is not straightforward because both temperature scales use different fixed points and scale widths. Therefore a Celsius Fahrenheit Converter is a useful tool.

How to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit without the use of a calculator? *170 c to f oven* are some mnemonics and rules of thumb to give an approximate estimate about temperature conversion.

260 | 130 | 127 | 3 |

280 | 140 | 138 | 2 |

300 | 150 | 149 | 1 |

320 | 160 | 160 | 0 |

340 | 170 | 171 | -1 |

360 | 180 | 182 | -2 |

380 | 190 | 193 | -3 |

400 | 200 | 204 | -4 |

420 | 210 | 216 | -6 |

440 | 220 | 227 | -7 |

460 | 230 | 238 | -8 |

480 | 240 | 249 | -9 |

500 | 250 | 260 | -10 |

Here's how.
