On September 22, 1946 Lotte Lehmann and Otto Klemperer attended a meeting at the Montecito Country Club to discuss the possibility of establishing a summer music school in Santa Barbara. In July of the next year Music Academy of the West began its inaugural season, which Time magazine noted in a 1947 issue as, “Last week, the West opened a musical finishing school of its own, at luxuriant seaside Santa Barbara.”

Through the years, career oriented students are chosen to study with a prestigious assortment of Music Academy faculty members that have included Lotte Lehmann, Roman Totenberg, Maurice Abravanel, Arnold Schoenberg, Darius Mihaud, Ernest Bloch, Gregor Piatigorsky, Gabor Rejto, Zvi Zeitlin and Martial Singher.

The Music Academy of the West complex (the original building dates from 1909) is nestled in the up-scale enclave of Montecito, which is around the corner from the coast and Four Seasons The Biltmore – an idyllic and unique venue that offers 8 weeks of summer master classes, concerts and lectures with emphasis on solo, collaborative, chamber music, vocal and orchestral performance.

This summer’s faculty and guest artists include Takacs Quartet, Glenn Dicterow, Cynthia Phelps, Nico Abondolo, New York Philharmonic String Quartet, Frank Huang, Carter Brey, Renee Fleming and Marilyn Horne.

Students also receive instruction from notable pianists like Stephen Hough, Robert McDonald, Jeremy Denk and Conor Hanick.

This review mentions two solo piano master classes given by Jerome Lowenthal at Hahn Hall on June 12 and June 19 and a chamber music concert on June 20 at the Lobero Theatre, which featured the world premiere of Jeremy Turner’s “Suite of Unreason,” an exceptionally imaginative work by a composer of OUR time – which will be given a “Critique of Pure Reason.”

The distinguished American concert pianist Jerome Lowenthal is on the faculty of The Juilliard School and his association with Music Academy of the West spans 47 years of teaching solo piano and piano chamber music classes in addition to giving numerous concerts. Each master class featured three accomplished students performing such works as Chopin’s sonata, Op. 58, Beethoven’s sonata, Op. 106, Debussy’s Images Book II, Rachmaninoff’s Corelli variations, Op. 42 and Mozart’s sonata K. 332.

Included in the mix was the standout twenty year-old Michael Davidman who studies at the Curtis Institute – a talent to watch. His account of Rachmaninoff’s complex and quirky sonata Op. 36 (1931 version) was electrifying for its sweeping yet refined sentimentality and pyrotechnical prowess of which he tossed off fiendishly difficult passagework with great finesse – and a few gasps were even heard from the spellbound audience.

Lowenthal’s comments brought out the best response in Davidman and all the players as he talked about the aesthetics of interpretation using wry humor, story telling, historical insights, aphorisms and at the piano illustration – of which the vast piano literature seemed at his command.  There was also a small on stage screen that projected a close-up of performers hands.

The Scene

Under the direction of celebrated mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne, the Music Academy Voice Program offers intensive training for young singers who demonstrate the potential for careers in music. Fellows are coached in singing technique, diction, interpretation, style, and presentation, and explore the literature of opera, musical theatre, and song.

Admission to the Voice Program is limited to 23 singers. Applicants must be 18 years of age prior to the start of the Summer Festival, and no older than 34 years of age through the Festival’s conclusion.

Singers accepted into the Voice Program receive opera assignments within the enrollment materials, and opera scenes assignments are distributed approximately 3 months before the Summer School and Festival begins. Each singer is expected to arrive ready for coaching with all repertoire memorized. Vocal assignments are based on admissions auditions but are subject to change according to Fellows’ progress during the Academy session.

Opera & Opera Scenes

Academy Voice Fellows, coached by Voice Program faculty, present a fully staged opera production at Santa Barbara’s 1,600-seat Granada Theatre each Summer Festival. 2015’s production will be Rossini’s Cinderella. In addition, Fellows perform in two semi-staged opera scenes with piano accompaniment.

Individual Lessons

Each Voice and Vocal Piano Fellow receives private weekly lessons from members of the faculty. In addition to their own lessons, Vocal Piano Fellows participate in the private lessons of the Voice Fellows.

Studio Classes

Scheduled periodically throughout the eight-week program, studio classes unite all Voice and Vocal Piano Fellows with faculty for in-depth sessions on aspects of technique, style and interpretation via performance, analysis, constructive critique, and discussion.

Masterclasses

Fellows perform and receive instruction from Voice and Vocal Piano Program faculty in the presence of an audience. Classes address the needs of both singer and pianist and cover a wide range of styles, nationalities, and periods of opera and song.

Foreign Language Coaching

Voice Fellows receive individual instruction in German, French, and Italian diction throughout the eight-week program.

Special Workshop: The Singer’s Career

Each summer a distinguished member of the vocal profession leads Music academy of the west Voice Fellows in a unique workshop covering issues central to the rich, complex life of the professional singer. Working in group and individual sessions, singers explore such topics as audition techniques, repertoire choice, and finding a music academy of the west Horne Song Competition

One of the most popular events of the Summer Festival is the prestigious Marilyn Horne Song Competition. A showcase for Academy singers and vocal pianists, the Marilyn Horne Song Competition awards two first prizes, one to a singer and one to a vocal pianist, each of whom must demonstrate both excellence in the performance of song repertoire and an exceptional gift for audience communication. First-prize winners will be presented in three recitals the following spring. Recital locations: Hahn Hall (Santa Barbara), Dallas, and New York City.

Other Performance Opportunities

Fellows are frequently offered other solo and ensemble perfomance opportunities including Picnic Concerts (Friday evening Fellow recitals), Santa Barbara Museum concerts (Thursday afternoon recitals), and vocal chamber performances.

It's a wonderful time: A guide to holiday fun

TheatreWorks Silicon Valley is ringing in the season with a classic more commonly seen on screens than on stages though right now, the same could be said for many holiday shows. That's because, unlike the Zoom-only festivities of December 2020, in-person plays, concerts and events are back.

TheatreWorks is among the many companies that have recently welcomed audiences back to theaters, though it's also continuing to offer a music academy of the west option. The company is staging "It's a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play," which reimagines the classic film as a 1940s radio broadcast for the holidays. The play offers a heartwarming holiday tale and a fun, behind-the-scenes look at an old-time radio show.

But still, at the crux of the story: When good-heartedeveryman George Bailey despairs that he's let everyone down, he gets a chance to learn how much his family, friends and town need him. He gets a peek at the alternate world that could have been had he not existed, and it's bleak (except for the part where his would-have-been-wife, Mary, becomes a librarian because librarians actually seem pretty cool.)

Like George, local arts groups and cultural institutions, including libraries, rallied heroically during the last 19 months, shifting to online and other creative ways to safely reach people. These new options continue to give groups the ability to expand audiences and make their offerings more accessible.

And now that we've all seen what life is like without in-person theater, concerts, galleries and other cultural spaces, this is our collective George Bailey moment for the arts: a chance to come back together in long-missed spaces with renewed joy and appreciation.

Read on for a collection of holiday performances and events most now presented in person, as well as some virtual options. Many venues require proof of vaccination or a negative test within 48 hours; as always, for in-person events, check for COVID-19 protocols before you go.

TheatreWorks Silicon Valley's production of "It's a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play" takes place Dec. 1-26 at the Lucie Stern Theater, 1305 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto. Also offered via on-demand video. theatreworks.org.
